ReplyHi Deborah, there is a hearing before the Florida Department of Environmental Protection June 24 regarding TECO's request to construct a transmission corridor between Channing Park and the Bridges. However, the Florida Public Service Commission has determined that there is a need for the transmission line and has given TECO its approval. From what I understand from other groups who have fought transmission corridors, the DEP has historically voted with the PSC.

ReplyAs editor of The Brandon News, I interviewed Shelton's Nursery owner Arthur Yambor shortly before his sudden death in 2004 at the age of 55. He was a big joker and told me he bought the statue of George Washington on the camel because he thought it was hilarious. The pink elephant, he told me, once sat in front of a bar on U.S. 301. For the 25th anniversary of the nursery, Arthur decided to paint it silver. There was an uproar in Brandon. Everyone wanted the elephant to remain pink. I, personally, consider these to be a valuable piece of Brandon's history and hope they will be preserved in a location where they can continue to be enjoyed by the residents.

ReplyThe fire department public relations spokesman said they were small children but didn't specify the ages. However, they were never left alone. The caregiver just took a shower.

ReplyI was a county commission reporter at the time Fred Karl, who had already retired as a Supreme Court justice, agreed to come out of retirement and help out Hillsborough County at a time when growth and, unfortunately, graft were rampant. I was, frankly, in awe of this guy who'd been an Army tank commander at the Battle of the Bulge, a state legislator and Supreme Court justice. But during his first week on the job, he lumbered into the press room at County Center, introduced himself in that gosh-darn manner his and then asked what he could do to help us. My Trib co-worker, the late Jim Sloan, and I were stunned. No one at the county had ever made that kind of gesture. Through the years I knew him, Fred was always friendly, accessible and a true gentleman. We need more more public servants like him.

It kind of irks me that Commissioner Higginbotham said his staff had a difficult time finding a place to meet. Isn't that the reason we built The Regent? Isn't it supposed to be a community center for public meetings like this? The Carrollwood Cultural Center, also built with county funding, is available for public meetings in that community. It also offers room for the community band to practice, for art classes, theater groups, book clubs and has filled its walls with the work of local artists. Why isn't The Regent equally accessible to the community? Just saying..l
