County Buying Citrus Park 'Recreation' Land

County officials aren't sure what they'll build on the 1.6 acres of land.

Hillsborough County is purchasing a little more than one and a half acres of land in the Citrus Park area near the existing Little League fields on Gunn Highway. The land is an entire block of property located north of the county's Citrus Park Little League field between Alloway Street and Alema Street west of Gunn Hwy. The parcel of land is designated for recreational use, but officials aren't sure exactly what they'll do with it yet. The land purchase completes a community saga that began in 2011. In 2011, residents became embroiled in a contentious fight over what should be done with $1.6 million leftover from money set aside for the community. Nothing personal but this land is in Citrus Park. I'd like to see the county do something for this area with it like a dog park and soccer fields. We really need a dog park.   more ›

Man Found Dead Outside Sheriff’s Office Identified

The man was found Tuesday night at a Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office.

A 56 year old man shot and killed himself behind a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office located in Citrus Park on Tuesday night, according to law enforcement officials. The body of Claude Orozco who lived at 7320 Exter Way was found at about 9:15 p.m. by a deputy. The District III sheriff's office is located at 7202 Gunn Highway near the Westfield Citrus Park mall. Orozco was not a recent or past employee of the sheriff's department. The death is still under investigation.

Public Comment Due Friday on Ballyhoo Trail Extension

A public meeting on the issue was held on May 30

Hillsborough County officials are still taking public comment regarding a trail extension at Ballyhoo Grill in Citrus Park after some residents expressing opinions during a May 30 meeting on the issue. Residents have until Friday, June 15, to submit comments about the project at Ehrlich Road and Gunn Highway, which proposes use of a limited crossing of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail to connect the restaurant's parking lots. The proposal also suggests using a portion of the trail right-of-way for parking. "We are going to take a synopsis of public comment for the Board of County Commissioners," said Steve Valdez, county spokesman. "It will go in late July, or the first meeting in August."
