Business Booms and Busts: From Pure Barre to Bella Gente

We compiled a list of business openings and closings.

In the past year, the communities of Carrollwood and Northdale have seen the economic climate both fizzle and flourish. CJ's Bar-B-Skew, 10047 N. Dale Mabry, and Bella Gente, 10019 N. Dale Mabry, are Carrollwood's most recent business casualties. Meanwhile, Lee Roy Selmon's restaurant and Whole Foods Market are on their way to Carrollwood and Northdale. Carrollwood-Northdale Patch readers have expressed mixed feelings about the booms and busts of local businesses. Below is a list of businesses we've written about that have opened or closed in Carrollwood since last year: New businesses: Recently closed businesses: What businesses do you want to see come to Carrollwood or Northdale? Construction Under Way Near Whole Foods Market

The county project will be completed before the store opens in Northdale on Nov. 1.

In a few months, Whole Foods Market will open at 3802 Northdale Boulevard near north Dale Mabry Highway. But before the organic food chain becomes part of north Tampa's business landscape, Hillsborough county workers have a few traffic adjustments to make. Modifications are currently being made to the medians near the business before it opens this fall as part of a county-funded project. "We're changing median access so traffic can get in and out easier," said county spokesman Steve Valdez of the project. The construction work, which slowed traffic on Thursday afternoon along Northdale Boulevard, is projected to be completed before the market opens on Nov. 1. Has the Whole Foods project slowed you down? Tell us in the comments.

I found the construction on Northdale Blvd originally difficult to maneuver and it still remains confusing. I am surprised that Sun Trust Bank didn't have more to say about the inability to turn left on to Northdale Blvd. when leaving their property. It will take some adjusting but I guess like most things we will have to adjust to progress. Why the big mystery about the grand opening of Whole …   more ›

Whole Foods in Northdale Launches Social Media Applications

The health food chain will be opening in Northdale at 3802 Northdale Boulevard, officials say.

The Internet buzz has already begun. The Whole Foods Market at 3802 Northdale Boulevard hasn't opened its doors yet, but officials from the company launched a Facebook page and Twitter handle (@WFMCarrollwood) this week to start promoting the newest location of the organic and natural food store. An opening date has not yet been decided for the chain, said Russ Benblatt, executive marketing coordinator for the Whole Foods Market's Florida region, but fall 2012 is the ballpark for the grand opening. Meanwhile, a few soon-to-be customers are anticipating the grand opening on the company's Facebook wall, which has begun to house content that includes photos of the store's exterior and healthy recipes. "Can't wait until you guys open!!!" wrote…

I will probably shop at Whole Foods for the freshly made food but will continue to buy most of my healthy ingredients at Abbies or NutritionSmart. I wonder if WF's purchases their organic fruits & vegetables from local farms? That would be a nice boost to those local growers.   more ›

Florida Whole Foods Recalls Some Prepared Foods

The voluntary recall is for prepared foods that contain raw yellow onions, because of potential health risks from Listeria.

A voluntary recall of certain prepared foods containing raw onions is under way at 17 Whole Foods Markets in Florida, including in Tampa. Customers are being asked to throw out certain foods (see list below) and return to their local Whole Foods with the receipt for a refund. The items would have been bought between July 7 and July 27. Although no one has reported becoming ill from eating the products, there is a concern about the quality of raw yellow onions in the fresh food items. The store announced that the onions may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall was initiated by Gills Onions, which processed the yellow onions. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that may cause serious or fatal infections in …
