What Happens to USPS Mail Destroyed in Fiery I-75 Crash?

With a lot of mail damaged in the crash, what does that mean for people who have lost their mail?

The Florida Highway Patrol is reporting that one of the trucks involved in the crash that has closed Interstate 75 near State Road 56 was carrying mail from the U.S. Postal Service.  Debbie Fetterly, a USPS spokeswoman, says the truck was carrying magazines and third-class mail from Jacksonville to Tampa. Most of the mail was also advertisements, she added. No First-Class Mail, bills, tax refund checks, personal letters, greeting cards or packages were on the truck, Fetterly said. They are still deciding how they will let people know if their mail was on the truck and how to deliver any salvaged mail. Customers who believe they may have had mail on the postal truck in the accident may call the USPS Consumer Affairs Office at (813) 354-6265…

Postal Service to End Saturday Mail Delivery

The U.S. Postal Service announced it will end Saturday mail delivery by Aug. 1.

Calling the six-days-per-week mail delivery business model “no longer sustainable,” the U.S. Postal Service Wednesday morning announced it will eliminate Saturday delivery of mail by Aug. 1. Post offices will remain open Saturdays and package deliveries will occur on Saturdays, according to the U.S. Postal Service.  According to the U.S. Postal Service, the reasons are continued economic struggles and the increasing use of the Internet for communications and bill paying by consumers. The U.S. Postal Service is also the only federal agency required to pre-fund health benefits for retirees, and those costs are escalating quickly. “Our current business model of delivering mail six days a week is no longer sustainable.
