RNC Provides Unique Opportunity for Students

About 20 University of Tampa and University of South Florida students have been given special access to one of the country's biggest political events.

Bryce Thomas, a 20-year-old marketing major at the University of Tampa, loves politics. Lucky for her, one of the country’s biggest political events is in her backyard this week, and she’s been granted access that’s typically only given to media and party delegates. Thomas is one of about 20 interns from the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida recruited by Time Magazine to help promote their RNC and DNC Foursquare badges and their Floor Pass app for the duration of the convention. In addition to getting convention credentials, the interns also get the opportunity to network with some big names. “It’s another way to interact with different people from different areas … and hear their wisdom,” says Thomas, who has made …

Political Expert: After RNC, Voter Turnout Should be Focus

When the Republican National Convention ends, campaign leaders should examine who and where their voters are, according to political expert Dr. Susan MacManus.

While USF’s Government and International Affairs professor and Lutz resident Dr. Susan MacManus acts as Tampa’s political expert on TV and radio during the Republican National Convention, she’s also looking ahead to what will happen after the RNC ends Aug. 30. In a Sayfie Review column Tuesday, MacManus examined who and where Florida’s Democrats and Republicans are. “Following the conventions, everything will be about GOTV—getting-out-the-vote,” MacManus wrote. “That makes it imperative for candidates, campaign strategists, and party activists to know where their voters (and their opponent’s) are concentrated.” According to Aug. 1 data, MacManus said among Florida’s 11,446,540 registered voters, Democrats make up 40 percent, Republicans …

Dr. Scott Ferguson, assistant professor in the Department of Humanities & Cultural Studies at the University of South Florida, started an online petition that has garnered more than 500 supporters.

Following other colleges that have stopped serving Chick-fil-A on their campuses, University of South Florida students and faculty are being invited to sign an online petition to remove Chick-fil-A from the Marshall Student Center. Dr. Scott Ferguson, assistant professor in the Department of Humanities & Cultural Studies at the University of South Florida started the petition about a month ago on change.org, a website that allows anyone to create their own grassroots campaign in any subject. The goal is to reach 1,000 signatures, and the petition has garnered more than 500. Anyone can sign the petition. “Inspired by similar efforts at college campuses across the United States, this petition aims to censure Chick-fil-A’s discriminatory …

Tampa Area to Re-establish ‘Clean Cities Coalition’

The ultimate goal is to lessen the community’s impact on the environment by reducing the use of petroleum and creating more sustainable transportation.

In an effort to expand the use of clean transportation throughout the Tampa Bay area, the former Suncoast Clean Cities Coalition is being re-established as the Tampa Bay Clean Cities Coalition. The partnership includes the University of South Florida, USF’s Patel School of Global Sustainability, the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission and TECO Energy. The effort will be formally launched Tuesday morning at the USF Patel Center for Global Solutions with a signing ceremony and inaugural gathering. USF Tuition Increases by 11 Percent

The Florida Board of Governors approved the hike Thursday.

The University of South Florida got what it was asking for Thursday (June 21): an 11 percent hike in tuition for 2012-13. The Florida Board of Governors considered tuition increase requests from 11 universities. According to a story from the Tampa Bay Times, board members negotiated for more than two hours to agree on the final increases, but their decisions seemed arbitrary at times, leading one member to say that there was no method to the madness. USF’s tuition increase came with some debate. The board waivered between a 9 and 11 percent hike, the story states. The maximum increase a university could ask for was 15 percent. During the 2011-12 school year, USF students paid $32 per credit hour. With the 11 percent increase for the next …

State Proposal Would Cut $128 Million from USF's Budget

The cuts amount to more than 58 percent of state funding for USF Tampa alone.

The University of South Florida is facing steep budget cuts under a proposal in the Florida Senate.  Last week, the state Senate submitted its proposed budget, which includes about $400 million in cuts to the state university system, including a $104 million budget cut for the University of South Florida, a USF news release said. Under the Senate proposal, USF's funding would drop to $74 million from the current level of $178 million. Budgets at other state universities would also receive significant cuts, according to the Senate proposal. According to USF, the budget cut for the entire system balloons to $128 million once other factors are taken into account, including loss of funding for the pharmacy program, loss of funding for USF …
