The first-ever Tampa Bay Margarita Festival takes place later this month, but time is running out on early ticket discounts.
Carrollwood argarita lovers who want to support a good cause might delight in an upcoming event set to take place at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in May. The first-ever Tampa Bay Margarita Festival is set for 2 to 10 p.m. on May 25. Attendees can anticipate live music, beach volleyball, fireworks and margaritas – lots of margaritas. Admission is $10 in advance, but rises to $15 on May 10. Margaritas range in price from $6 to $8. A portion of the proceeds will go to a University of South Florida nonprofit called Students in Free Enterprise, said Monica Varner, who is helping organize the festival, according to South Tampa Patch. Florida lawmakers are considering another 6 percent raise in tuition at the state’s universities.
Carrollwood high school students who want to further their education at the University of South Florida or another state university may soon find themselves paying more to get in. Even though funding for universities is up and budget cuts are off the table for the first time in years, Florida lawmakers are considering a tuition hike of 6 percent, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Over the past few years, tuition at Florida’s universities has climbed by as much as 15 percent as funding from the state fell. While funding is improving, lawmakers say the hike is needed to help offset some of the damage done during leaner years, the Times reports. Gov. Rick Scott, however, does not agree. The University of South Florida women’s basketball team has reason to celebrate. For the second time ever, the Bulls have made the NCAA tournament cut, according to Tampa Bay Times. The Bulls are ranked No. 10 and faceoff in their first tourney game Saturday, March 23 against Texas Tech in Lubbock. "We're just so happy to be in the tournament,” The Tampa Tribune quoted USF forward Inga Orekhova as saying. “We don't know much about Texas Tech, but we're going to find out a whole lot more.'' If the Bulls defeat Texas Tech, they’ll move onto the second round of post-season play, which runs March 25-26. University of South Florida football fans wanted change and it looks like they’re going to get it. Rather than a shift in strategy, however, they’re going to see a change in the Bulls’ head office. Coach Skip Holtz is out of a job after yesterday’s season finale, which ended with a 27-3 loss to Pittsburg, TBO.com is reporting. Holtz had been with the Bulls for three seasons, none of which produced winning performances. Earlier this week Holtz’s record with the Bulls had The Tampa Tribune speculating that change was in the air at USF. Autar Kaw, an engineering professor, has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
Autar Kaw, an engineering professor at the University of South Florida, has won the nation’s highest undergraduate teaching honor. He has been named a 2012 U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He is being recognized Nov. 15 at the National Press Club and the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. Kaw is one of four professors selected from more than 300 nominees to receive the award. He was selected in the category of Outstanding Doctoral and Research Universities Professor of the Year. The Bright Futures students were treated to an ice cream social.
The University of South Florida and the Florida Lottery kicked off the fall semester earlier this week by honoring Bright Futures scholarship recipients. Students attended a social with ice cream donated by Florida Lottery corporate retailer Winn-Dixie, according to a press release. They were joined by USF President Dr. Judy Genshaft and Lottery Secretary Cynthia O’Connell, who congratulated the students on their commitment to academic excellence. From the Florida Department of Transportation: To actively promote pedestrian and bicycle safety at the University of South Florida and its surrounding area, the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at USF has obtained approval from the FDOT Traffic Safety Office to conduct the first ever USF Bulls Walk and Bike Week: Walk Wise, Bike Smart, and Drive Carefully educational campaign. The campaign will take place on the USF Tampa campus, Sept. 10-14. About 20 University of Tampa and University of South Florida students have been given special access to one of the country's biggest political events.
Bryce Thomas, a 20-year-old marketing major at the University of Tampa, loves politics. Lucky for her, one of the country’s biggest political events is in her backyard this week, and she’s been granted access that’s typically only given to media and party delegates. Thomas is one of about 20 interns from the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida recruited by Time Magazine to help promote their RNC and DNC Foursquare badges and their Floor Pass app for the duration of the convention.
