County Ponders Free Rent for 3 Businesses Hurt by RNC

The businesses were forced to close down during the Republican National Convention in August.

August’s Republican National Convention in downtown Tampa was a mixed bag of good and bad news for businesses in the county. Some businesses that thought they’d see a surge in business didn’t realize the profits they’d hoped for. Others reported doing very well as hundreds of Republicans converged on Tampa Bay. But a few businesses had to shut down entirely, forgoing all hope of realizing profit during the event. Three of the businesses that faced the latter circumstances will be brought up during Thursday’s Hillsborough County Commission meeting. Commissioners are being asked to give the three businesses that operate out of the first floor of County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., a month of free rent in December to make up for the losses …

RNC Bus Snags: Florida GOP Hires Own Transportation

Fed up with problems from RNC-provided buses, the Republican Party of Florida hired a charter bus company to transport its delegates.

The Republican Party of Florida is hoping delegates will have a smoother ride for the rest of the convention, now that the organization has chartered a bus company to provide transportation. On Tuesday, delegates were late to the opening day of the Republican National Convention because RNC-contracted buses were not sent to pick them up. Then the delegates were stuck on buses for hours Tuesday after the convention ended for the evening. "It was an absolute mess up," said Florida delegate Pat Fahey of Daytona Beach. Fahey did not arrive back to Palm Harbor's Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club until after 3 a.m. Wednesday. "Nobody knew where the buses were located when we came out of the convention. Everybody was sending us to a different place. …

Roads Closed for RNC to Reopen by Noon Friday

Traffic was diverted in areas of downtown Tampa due to the Republican National Convention this week. The RNC ends today.

As delegates and members of the media wrap up their coverage of the Republican National Convention today in Tampa, city officials announced their plans for resuming traffic flow downtown. Here's the plan The RNC Call Center, which provides information on downtown parking options, directions, hospitality information and street closures, will be operating until noon on Friday. The toll-free number is 866-762-8687.

Protesters' Paltry RNC Presence Surprises Some

Few demonstrations have been held since the Republican National Convention began on Monday. It ends today.

Blame it on Monday's gloomy weather. Or the sizzle of the August heat after the sky cleared on Tuesday. Whatever the reason, protesters in downtown Tampa haven't shown up in droves as city officials expected during the Republican National Convention. Those who ventured away from Romneyville - a makeshift headquarters for protesters - toward the Tampa Convention Center have gathered in pockets at intersections, gripping Ron Paul signs or chanting in groups. Last night, protesters taunted officers by dangling doughnuts on sticks. Some, like Doug Marris, chose the lone wolf route. On Thursday morning, Marris, a 55-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran, held a white sign bearing a plethora of hand-written phrases and acronyms like "domestic spying" …

Carrollwood Woman Breaks Silence About Human Trafficking

Connie Rose is a voice for trafficked minors.

Right now, as Week of Welcome fades into memory and college campuses are merely days into full operation, naïve freshman, away from home, possibly for the first time, are being watched. Blondes, brunettes, redheads – bespectacled bookworms, pink haired video gamers and underage partiers. Each are new on campus, trying to find their footing in an environment completely alien to them. The Predator Makes His Move The freshman is sitting alone, wishing she had taken a better meal plan. She peeks into her wallet a third time, but she cannot will a $5 bill to appear to buy the latte that is splashed across the coffee shop sign. In a college logoed T-shirt and ripped jeans, young, clean cut, handsome or “hot “as her friends back home would …

Local Culinary Arts Students Learn the Ropes at the RNC

Students from the Culinary Arts Academy at Land O' Lakes High School are in downtown Tampa this week at the Republican National Convention.

Wesley Earley was 8 years old when he figured out he wanted to become a chef. His goal? To own a restaurant one day, serving a mixture of Italian and Southern cuisine. His "curation dish" - mashed potatoes with Italian sausage, onions and peppers - might even make the menu's cut. This week, the 17-year-old and about two dozen of his classmates in the Culinary Arts Academy at Land O' Lakes High School spent part of their week in downtown Tampa at the Republican National Convention. Donning chefs' hats and coats, culinary arts students are receiving hands-on experience in the kitchens of the Tampa Bay Times Forum. Criteria required students to be 16 years old and have a minimal grade average of a 'B' to participate, which dwindled the …

RNC Provides Unique Opportunity for Students

About 20 University of Tampa and University of South Florida students have been given special access to one of the country's biggest political events.

Bryce Thomas, a 20-year-old marketing major at the University of Tampa, loves politics. Lucky for her, one of the country’s biggest political events is in her backyard this week, and she’s been granted access that’s typically only given to media and party delegates. Thomas is one of about 20 interns from the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida recruited by Time Magazine to help promote their RNC and DNC Foursquare badges and their Floor Pass app for the duration of the convention. In addition to getting convention credentials, the interns also get the opportunity to network with some big names. “It’s another way to interact with different people from different areas … and hear their wisdom,” says Thomas, who has made …
