Temperatures in the Carrollwood area and around Tampa Bay continue to hang in the mid-80s through the weekend after NOAA announced that 2012 was the warmest in more than 100 years.
According to NOAA's National Climatic Data Center, 2012 was the warmest year on record since 1895 in the lower 48 states. On average, the temperature reached 55.3 degrees in 2012, which topped the previous record set in 1998 by a whole degree, according to The Weather Channel. Surely you've noticed the abnormally busy pools and beaches here in Tampa Bay despite the fact that it's January. Experts from The Weather Channel say the unusually warm start to winter is due in part to high pressure spanning from Florida to the Bahamas. Chilly mornings and mild afternoons are on tap for most of the week.
As temperatures in the Tampa Bay area dip for the first time in the fall season, Carrollwood and Northdale area residents are enjoying the change of pace. A quick query on the Carrollwood-Northdale Patch Facebook page this morning yielded near-instant likes when readers were asked what they thought about the mild weather that’s carried forward from the weekend. Reader Angelica Maria summed it up the best. All she had to say was “perfect!” While we’ve seen a nice drop in the high and low temperatures as Hurricane Sandy passed the state, the National Weather Service’s forecast shows it’s not likely to continue for long. Their strength might not mirror yesterday’s storms.
With power outages and downed trees part of the morning landscape throughout the Tampa Bay area today, the last thing most residents want to hear is that more storms are in the forecast. Unfortunately, that’s the case. However, forecasters don't think the storms will have the same punch as Tuesday and some are already firing up around Ft. Myers, said National Weather Service meteorologist Ernie Jilison. Those will work their way into the Tampa Bay area this afternoon, possibly quicker than on Tuesday. “I do think we’ll see plenty of showers this afternoon and some of them could be strong,” Jillson said. “(There’s) a pretty good batch of moisture coming up from South Florida.
