Fifth-Graders at IDS-CC Racing Cardboard Boats

The event will be held on Friday at the YMCA

At the end of the school year, as they get ready to bid bon voyage to elementary school, fifth graders at Independent Day School-Corbett Campus sharpen important skills that will help them to navigate the waters of middle school. They do this in a unique and nautical way by designing, constructing and racing boats made entirely of cardboard, an exercise in teamwork, problem solving, and creativity dubbed, “The Cardboard Challenge.” By grouping the class in randomly selected teams, the fifth grade teachers provide students with the opportunity to learn valuable lessons in cooperation and communication, as well as refine benchmark skills in math. As a first step, students brainstorm ideas for a boat design and translate those ideas into …

The competition inspires students to think seriously about issues that affect both local communities and the nation by creating a short video documentary that responds to a specific topic. This year's topic, "The Constitution and You," required students to select any provision of the U.S. Constitution and create a video illustrating its significance to them. At IDS-CC, as one of the integrated English and Technology units, all eighth-grade …

Seventh and eighth-grade students from IDS-CC traveled to Spain, and fourth through eighth-grade students from the school in Madrid came to Carrollwood to continue a sister schools program that started a few years ago. The purpose of the program was to allow students to experience another culture. Today, the 12 students from Spain will return home with their three teachers, according to Mary Beth Erskine of IDS-CC. But before they go, students will share memories of their experience - and have a pizza party send-off. Come join the …
