Cops: Black Bear Took Up Roost in Tree

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says the bear was hanging out in a tree in the Egypt Lake area.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies do more than catch bad guys and protect and serve people. There are days when they also safeguard residents from local wildlife run amok, or vice versa. That was the case May 17 as deputies from the District III area reported to the scene of a wildlife call. A black bear, about 250 pounds in heft, had climbed a tree at 2817 Broad St. Deputies kept watch while the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission deployed officers to help. Those officers used tranquilizer darts to get the bear out of the tree, The Tampa Tribune reported. Eloy Perez, 70, was alerted to the bear in his backyard by his dog, Summer. “I ain't ever seen anything that quick,” Perez told the Tribune. “That bear ran up that …

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies have one man in custody and continue to look for a second man thought to be connected to a morning residential burglary in the Lake Magdalene area of Carrollwood May 14. Deputies received a call about a burglary in progress from a home in the 15100 block of Lake Magdalene Boulevard just before noon May 14. When they arrived, they found that one suspect had left the scene in a car and the other had run away on foot and possibly jumped into a nearby lake. That prompted a search of the lake by the sheriff’s office’s dive team. Deputies were able to catch one of the men and now have him in custody, said Debbie Carter, sheriff’s office spokeswoman. Fugitive Webpage Puts Extra Eyes on Carrollwood Streets

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s recent launch of a new webpage dedicated to publicizing wanted men and women enables residents to help take a bite out of crime, officials say.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has a new tool to use in its battle against crime. While the concept isn’t necessarily new, the design of the county’s new Find-a-Fugitive webpage is, said Cristal Bermudez Nunez, spokeswoman for the agency. The old Cell Block Shake Down webpage was taken down in favor of a cleaner, less graphics-heavy design that lets the sheriff’s office post the county’s Top 10 wanted fugitives and its Top 5 wanted “deadbeat parents” and “dangerous drivers.” Older cases are featured along with new ones on the site because it’s important to the sheriff’s office that people know “we haven’t forgotten about them,” Nunez said. “You may very well know these people,” she added. Find-a-Fugitive’s look is not only easier…

Hillsborough’s 10 Most Wanted: How Carrollwood Can Help Catch Them

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has an online tool residents can use to keep up with the area’s most-wanted fugitives.

The Internet is fast becoming the new “post office” for law enforcement agencies that want to make sure photos of their most wanted fugitives make it into circulation. Instead of just hanging posters on post office walls, law enforcement agencies these days are creating webpages to get the word out to area residents. Some are even using social media outlets like Facebook as tools in the fight against crime. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has its own online “post office” wall. Dubbed “Find-a-Fugitive,” the webpage features the photos and some background information on the county’s Top 10 most wanted. It also shares photos of deadbeat parents and “dangerous drivers.” Cristal Bermudez Nunez, sheriff's office spokeswoman, said the …
