Carrollwood and Northdale area residents who want to find out more about going green may want to make the short drive to downtown Tampa Thursday, May 9. That’s when Hillsborough County’s Environmental Protection Commission is playing host to its 12th annual Clean Air Fair. The event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Poe Plaza, which is on Jackson Street at the corner of Franklin Street. Attendees can expect to see a lot of environmental and community exhibits during the event, according to county officials. They’ll also gain insights on how they can help the environment and go a little greener around their homes. Free food, health information, prize drawings and live music are also planned. The Tampa area joined nearly 100 cities across the nation Tuesday when community leaders officially partnered to form the Tampa Bay Clean Cities Coalition. University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft, Hillsborough Environmental Protection Commission Executive Director Richard Garrity, and TECO Energy President and CEO John Ramil signed an agreement to launch the new effort, which is expected to help expand the use of clean transportation throughout the Tampa Bay area. “We have formed a great partnership with a worthy goal,” Genshaft declared during a special ceremony at the USF Patel Center for Global Solutions. The ultimate goal is to lessen the community’s impact on the environment by reducing the use of petroleum and creating more sustainable transportation.
In an effort to expand the use of clean transportation throughout the Tampa Bay area, the former Suncoast Clean Cities Coalition is being re-established as the Tampa Bay Clean Cities Coalition. The partnership includes the University of South Florida, USF’s Patel School of Global Sustainability, the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission and TECO Energy. The effort will be formally launched Tuesday morning at the USF Patel Center for Global Solutions with a signing ceremony and inaugural gathering.
