6-Cent Gas Tax Likely to Continue for Carrollwood Motorists

Hillsborough County Commissioners will consider a measure to extend the 6-cent local option gas tax through 2042 when they meet April 3.

Carrollwood residents hoping for some relief at the pumps aren’t likely to get it from Hillsborough County. The commission is expected to discuss an extension of the county’s existing 6-cent gas tax during its Wednesday, April 3 meeting. The local option gas tax, which expires Aug. 31, is used to fund road maintenance projects. If it’s allowed to expire, the county and its three cities stand to lose millions. “If the Fuel Tax is not extended, the County would lose an estimated $1,780,000 in FY 13 revenue that is currently used exclusively for the maintenance of transportation infrastructure,” the commission agenda reads. “The estimated loss in FY 14 and future years is estimated at $21.5 million per year.” The cities of Tampa, Temple …

Reject cathy oneil 9:34 am on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 I don't see proper road maintenance being done. Pot holes everywhere, missing chunks. It seems much energy, time and money went into speed humps no one wanted . Those near Casey and Lowell have a disfunctional intersection. County Budget Numbers Are Looking Up

Hillsborough County Commissioners will receive preliminary figures for the county’s estimated $3 billion fiscal year 2014 budget during an upcoming workshop.

Carrollwood area residents looking for signs the local economy is improving might only need look to Hillsborough County for some encouragement. After facing losses that amounted to about $300 million over the last six years, Hillsborough County’s Budget Director Tom Fesler gets to present commissioners with some relatively good news Thursday, Feb. 14. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Fesler will provide commissioners with a preliminary budget analysis that spells out the county’s estimated revenues and expenses with a deficit that could prove to be as small as $3.2 million. Those projections are for the Fiscal Year 2014, which begins Oct. 1, 2013. (The analysis contains projections for fiscal years 2013-18.) There is a catch with the good…

Library, Road, Recreation Improvements in Approved Budget

County Commissioners approved a $3 billion budget Thursday night.

An Upper Tampa Bay Library expansion, a new county-wide soccer complex and upgrades to the Upper Tampa Bay Trail were all part of the $3 billion budget approved by Hillsborough County Commissioners Thursday night. The approval came after a public hearing that allowed citizens to voice their opinions on the plan, which would also give a one-time $1,200 bonus to all county employees. Among the most popular items discussed at the meeting was the county-wide soccer complex, which would cost $15 million, have 14-20 fields and be able to accommodate large soccer events. County officials are not sure where the complex would be located, but will begin the search for land. Included in the budget is $9 million for sidewalk repairs and another $4.5 …

County Invites Residents to Comment on Proposed Budget

Public hearings are scheduled for Sept. 12 and 20.

Residents will have a chance to comment on Hillsborough County's 2013 budget at two public hearings Sept. 12 and 20. However, County Administrator Mike Merrill isn't expecting a groundswell of opponents. He said he believes he's proposing a budget that will meet the approval of county taxpayers. "I am pleased to submit a recommended budget that is balanced without using reserves, without raising taxes, and without reducing service to our citizens," said Merrill. "Despite the most severe economic downturn in our collective memory, Hillsborough County remains in sound financial condition." The proposed $3.06 billion budget reduces the millage rate by 4.24 percent from the aggregate roll-back millage rate. The millage rate is the tax rate …
