Hillsborough County has a death problem. That’s about the only point everyone in attendance at the May 1 County Commission meeting seemed to agree on. How best to address the number of cat and dog deaths, however, was a bone of contention for sure, especially in regard to cats. Residents, activists and veterinary experts lined up to speak both for and against the county’s new plan to reduce euthanasia rates for dogs and cats while increasing the “live outcome” rate. The plan, estimated to cost about $1.3 million in the first year alone, is designed to introduce a variety of programs all created with the same goal in mind: to stop the “senseless killing of animals,” as Hillsborough Commission Chairman Ken Hagan said. Often when you think about pet adoption, images of heading to the Hillsborough County Animal Services shelter and picking out the perfect pet come to mind. But there's a group of people who you may not think about who contribute a valuable resource to county pet adoption - pet foster families. "Having a foster family is helpful on so many different levels," said Marti Ryan, spokeswoman for Hillsborough County Animal Services. "The animal has a place to calm down and get care. The shelter becomes very instrumental in getting the dog or cat placed. They begin to know dogs habits, strengths and weaknesses or behavior issues." A 12-year-old miniature pinscher will assist hearing-impaired students at the school.
There's been an addition to the student body at Ben Hill Middle School. But this is no typical backpack-toting teen aimlessly wandering the halls in search of Spanish class. The new classmate is a 12-year-old miniature pinscher named Parris who arrived at the school Wednesday, Feb. 27, bringing a valuable lesson about caring. Given up by his previous family because of financial hardship, Parris was suffering from heartworm disease when he was dropped off at Hillsborough County Animal Services. However, Parris came with a special talent that Animal Services Director Ian Hallett recognized could be of great value. Parris is a trained service dog for the hearing impaired. Diamond is a 2 year old petite black Labrador retriever and Blondie is her slightly younger, fair-haired sister. Both dogs were already spayed and wearing tags traced to pets long gone. The Cats, Bats and Bones event is a chance for kids to meet and greet shelter animals and have fun.
Have you been in the market for a pet? Hillsborough County Animal Services' Cats, Bats and Bones event may be the perfect time to adopt one. The Halloween inspired event is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.-3:00p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012. Participants can meet real Florida bats, trick-or-treat with shelter animals and take part in a kids costume parade. Kids will also decorate art to place in the shelter.
