The Carrollwood Day School's Dominiq Sicardo has a unique motivating factor — the memory of his mother, who died from a brain aneurysm last fall.
At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Carrollwood Day School junior Dominiq Sicardo is everything a coach would want in a prep athlete. He's tall but not lanky, thick but not chubby, powerful and precise. It's no wonder he's a star on both the CDS baseball and football teams. And this is a big year for Sicardo as he steps into the primary role at catcher and No. 2 pitcher in the Patriots' rotation, as well as the school's likely starting quarterback in the fall. "Dominiq has unlimited athletic ability," said Patriots baseball head coach David Clement. "His hand-eye coordination and strength make him an exceptional hitter — his strong, live arm make him very effective at pitcher and catcher." In the midst of his success, tragedy struck the Sicardo …

The Gaither High Cowboys came up just short in their Class 7A-District 7 title bid, losing to Tampa Bay Tech on Friday night.
The Gaither High football team got a tremendous effort from its defense and owned most of the second half Friday night, but its efforts came up just short as a last-minute field goal by Tampa Bay Tech iced a 17-14 Cowboys loss that clinched the Clas 7A-District 7 title. The Titans (6-3, 5-0) came out firing and completed their first pass to junior running back Jamaruz Thompkins for a 33-yard gain across midfield. The Cowboys defense tightened and forced a punt. The Titans defense answered with an interception by senior safety Devaun Stephens that was off the fingertips of Cowboys receiver senior Mitch McNall. Stephens returned the pick all the way to the Cowboys 18-yard line. A screen pass to sophomore running back Deon Thompson from 18 …

The Gaither Cowboys and Carrollwood Day School Patriots both have district road games this Friday.
Gaither: The Cowboys (5-2, 3-0 Class 7A-District 7) are on the brink of the impossible. They are one win away from making the playoffs and two wins away from a district title. "We're playing for three things this week: a chance to make the playoffs, stop a losing streak with Chamberlain and guarantee a winning season," said head coach Jason Stokes. No one thought they would make the playoffs this year. No one imagined they could win the district title. The Cowboys have not done either — or even had a winning record — since 2007. They have not beaten Chamberlain in more than seven years. A win against Chamberlain (2-6, 1-2) would put the Cowboys in the 7A playoffs, even if they drop their last two games. It would validate what first-year …

Both Carrollwood Day School and Gaither are coming off significant wins and head into district games this week.
Carrollwood Day: The Patriots (4-3, 2-3 Class 2A-District 5) are coming off a 33-17 win over Bradenton Christian. Junior tailback Robert Davis continued his jaw-dropping season with a 13-carry, 272-yard, three-touchdown performance. Through seven games, Davis has rushed for 1,238 yards and 17 touchdowns. The yardage total leads Class 2A, and Davis' whopping 15.48 yards per carry not only leads 2A, it is second in the state of Florida. The win wedged CDS in there with four other teams that have three district losses. Canterbury (5-1 overall), Admiral Farragut (4-1) and Cambridge (4-2) are all looking down at the Patriots right now. Indian Rocks is a half-game ahead. However, everyone has either three or four district games left on the slate…

Both Tampa Gaither and Carrollwood Day School have very winnable games this week.
Gaither High: The Cowboys (3-2, 2-0 in district) are coming off a much needed, 37-7 home victory over Steinbrenner last Friday. Senior Eddie Pastrana had five interceptions in the game. "It was a great win over a local rival," said head coach Jason Stokes. "I think it showed we are a different team this year." The win marked the first home victory of the year for the Cowboys. "We needed it; I think the fans might have started to get a little down on us," said Stokes. The Cowboys are now positioned handsomely atop District 7, just a half game ahead of Tampa Bay Tech, whom they face Nov. 4. That matchup will determine a great deal about who will win the district and may even decide it outright. It is starting to look like a two-horse race …
