Students Encouraged To Be Cautious Following County Shigella Outbreak

Officials Fear Increase in Cases During Holidays

The Hillsborough County Health Department is reporting a spike in Shigella cases, with 40 cases confirmed since the start of October affecting school-aged children. Shigellosis is a bacterial infection with symptoms of diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. Cases are confirmed after a child goes to see their doctor and tests positive for the infection. Mild cases are resolved within a week without antibiotics, according to the Centers for Disease Control. While there have been no outbreaks in child care facilities or schools in Carrollwood or Hillsborough county, students and their parents are being warned to practice good hygiene during the holiday break.
