6-Cent Gas Tax Likely to Continue for Carrollwood Motorists

Hillsborough County Commissioners will consider a measure to extend the 6-cent local option gas tax through 2042 when they meet April 3.

Carrollwood residents hoping for some relief at the pumps aren’t likely to get it from Hillsborough County. The commission is expected to discuss an extension of the county’s existing 6-cent gas tax during its Wednesday, April 3 meeting. The local option gas tax, which expires Aug. 31, is used to fund road maintenance projects. If it’s allowed to expire, the county and its three cities stand to lose millions. “If the Fuel Tax is not extended, the County would lose an estimated $1,780,000 in FY 13 revenue that is currently used exclusively for the maintenance of transportation infrastructure,” the commission agenda reads. “The estimated loss in FY 14 and future years is estimated at $21.5 million per year.” The cities of Tampa, Temple …

Reject cathy oneil 9:34 am on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 I don't see proper road maintenance being done. Pot holes everywhere, missing chunks. It seems much energy, time and money went into speed humps no one wanted . Those near Casey and Lowell have a disfunctional intersection. Most fear using the crosswalk and motorists at this intersection argue over the right of way daily. Speed humps damaging …   more ›

Carrollwood Gas Prices Nearing $4

The price of gas has climbed by as much as 30 cents over the last week.

Does your wallet feel lighter every time you fill up? You’re not alone! Carrollwood area residents are seeing a pinch at the pumps that’s become even more evident in the last week or so. A drive through town Feb. 21 revealed prices edging toward $4. On Feb. 12, the price was only $3.60. The Shell on the corner of Ehrlich and Hutchison roads had regular gas priced at $3.85 a gallon Feb. 21. The 7-Eleven at 11211 N. Dale Mabry Highway, however, was up to $3.90 on Thursday, according to Carrollwood-Northdale Patch's Commute page. Last week, we reported that gas in the Tampa Bay area had gone up by as much as 25 cents a gallon for regular in the last 30 days. Now, it's climbed even higher. The reasons for the spike are varied and include: …

I would not mind the price of gas going up if it was going into the right places which is our infrastructure which currently rates a D rating but very pissed as it going to speculators and oil companies who refuse the build new refinery’s saying the environmentalist stop them but not true as there plenty of small towns that would welcome a refinery to their town as I also bring high paying jobs…   more ›

County’s 6-Cent Gas Tax Ends in August

Expiration of the local tax could mean good news at the pumps, but don’t spend the extra cash just yet.

Carrollwood and Northdale residents hoping to save a little at the pumps could get a reprieve if Hillsborough County’s 6-cent local option gas tax is allowed to expire Aug. 31. Don’t go spending the extra cash just yet though. If the county allows the tax to sunset this summer, it could deliver a financial blow of about $22 million to Hillsborough’s budget, officials say. The County Commission meets Feb. 14 in a workshop where it will hear preliminary budget figures for Fiscal Year 2014, which begins on Oct. 1, 2013. That 6-cent gas tax is used by the county to fund road maintenance projects and transportation operations. Without the revenue stream, the county’s anticipated $3.2 million budget deficit would likely grow to about $25.2 …

The infrastructure in the USA is based on a relatively fixed cent/dollar amount which has barely changed in 20 years so while inflation went up the amount collected stayed the same so now it paying out about 40% of what it did 20 years so even raising it a penny or two will not help much what really is needed will be quite painful as we need to double the gas tax and then tie it to inflation just…   more ›

Carrollwood Area Gas Prices Rise

With prices up by about 25 cents in the last 30 days, we’d like to know how are you handling the pinch at Carrollwood's pumps?

As the price at the pump continues to rise, Carrollwood-Northdale Patch wants to hear from you about how you’re handling the bite out of your budget. According to The Tampa Tribune, the price of gasoline has climbed about 25 cents in the last 30 days in the Tampa Bay area. It’s gone up about 6 cents in the last week alone. The reasons are many and complicated, The Tribune reports: Whatever the cause, one thing is clear: Prices are up and they’re likely to remain so through late April, according to AAA Auto Club South’s Jessica Brady. Prices, she told The Tribune, tend to start falling when the summer months are near. As of today, Feb. 12, the cheapest price on a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.60 in the Carrollwood and Northdale area. …
