Florida will introduce the "Safer, Smarter Kids" curriculum this week in all public kindergarten classes.
State leaders will join with childhood sexual abuse survivor and advocate Lauren Book to launch Florida’s new sexual abuse prevention curriculum, Safer, Smarter Kids in elementary schools throughout the state, including those in Carrollwood, on Thursday, Sept. 27. Multiple studies and research over the past 20 years continue to confirm that childhood sexual abuse puts children at significant risk for a wide range of medical, psychological, behavioral and sexual disorders that can persist into and throughout adulthood. The 2009 National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence found: About Safer, Smarter Kids The new curriculum, which has been delivered to every kindergarten class in Florida, helps children learn how to sidestep the traps …

Walker's son killed himself a few years ago after being bullied.
Jake Gersten was in middle school when he first experienced bullying. Gersten, who is Jewish, said his religion made him a target for other kids' taunts. "It didn't last for a long time, but I was able to feel how hurtful it is," said Gersten, now 17. "It's difficult to be picked on because of your religion." Instead of lashing out at his peers, Gersten, a student at Carrollwood Day School, chose a different route: After hearing an anti-bullying speaker last year during a Jewish youth group program in Orlando, he helped organize a presentation at CDS this spring that explained bullying and encouraged students to take a pledge against it. The presentation also included a short video that detailed the speaker's story. Sirdeaner Walker's son …

The Cowboys broke a six year curse at Braulio Alonso Stadium on Saturday night.
It's been six years since the Cowboys won a game on Alonso's field. The last time Gaither beat Alonso was 2007. But on Saturday, the Gaither Cowboys knocked off the Alonso Ravens, 24-21. It's just one more stepping stone toward where head coach Jason Stokes intends to take it. The Cowboys overcame some early miscues, four offsides penalties in the first half, five in the game, and fumbling the opening the kickoff, which would eventually result in a 7-0 lead for the Ravens. The Cowboys would score two touchdowns before the half, one on a catch and run by senior athlete Shug Oyegunle, the other on senior running back Vu Le's five-yard run. Alonso went ahead, 21-17 on junior Ish Witter's touchdown with two minutes left to play. The Cowboys …

Lake Magdalene Elementary principal Dodi Davenport took a break from a busy first day of school by resting on one of the benches in the new School Community Park. Where parents once stood in dirt and blaring sun waiting for their children, there was now a brick paved patio with shade trees, landscaping and benches. The park was designed and funded by the LME Dads’ Club with additional funding provided by the LME PTA and school.
