Walker will perform on Jan. 24
This information was provided by Hillsborough County: The internationally acclaimed flautist Jim Walker will join Jim Burge and the Jazz Directions for a special Jazz with Jim concert at the Carrollwood Cultural Center on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Walker will also host a demonstration workshop for Hillsborough County secondary students at noon. Walker, who may be best known in pop culture circles as the musician playing the penny whistle at the beginning of the single My Heart Will Go On from the Titanic soundtrack, is also known by professional musicians for his indelible marks in the music industry. The cultural center has kicked off its Spring Classical Music Series.
Classical music lovers don’t have to drive far to take in live performances thanks to the Carrollwood Cultural Center. The 4537 Lowell Road venue has kicked off its Spring Classical Music Series with performances scheduled through April. A variety of artists – ranging from local pianists to world-renowned performers – are on the agenda. Up next in the series is “if Music Be The Food,” set for Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. The admission to this show is one nonperishable food item to be donated to Tampa Bay Harvest. A half day conference on Sunday will showcase people in the community making a positive difference.
On Sunday, likeminded change-makers will come together at the Carrollwood Cultural Center to talk about their ideas under the theme “Dream Big Then Do.” The event, TEDxYouth@TampaBay founded by Terri Willingham, is the third annual conference of its kind and is recommended for attendees 10 and older. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a nonprofit organization devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading.’ Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. Matt Ellrod began his artistic career at a young age.
Stop by the Carrollwood Cultural Center, and one thing is clear: local artists are making their mark in Tampa Bay. One of those artists is Matt Ellrod, who has displayed his artwork at the center, 4537 Lowell Road, and will be featured there next month. We recently talked to Ellrod about how he got his start and how the community can view or purchase his work. Patch: How did you get your start as an artist? Ellrod: As a pre-teen in Maryland, my brother Rick and I made our own comic books, and we were sure we would work for Marvel Comics one day. This just in from the Carrollwood Cultural Center: The Carrollwood Cultural Center proudly presents MUSIC REBORN at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. MUSIC REBORN is a project focusing on the research, performance, and preservation of music suppressed by the Nazis during the first of the 20th Century. This includes both Jewish and non-Jewish composers from across Europe, many of whom were conservatory-trained and internationally acclaimed prior to the reign of the Third Reich. Their music encompasses a wide variety of musical styles and genres. This just in from the Carrollwood Cultural Center: The Bay Area Saxophone Quartet (BASQ) will return to the Carrollwood Cultural Center on Sunday, October 21 at 2 p.m. BASQ is a group of local musicians who have been performing throughout the Tampa Bay area for almost three decades. Members of the quartet include Jay B. Starkey (soprano saxophone), Jim Burge (tenor saxophone), Ted Hope (baritone saxophone) and Craig MacDougal (alto saxophone). Starkey, founder of the Bay Area Saxophone Quartet, is a retired cattle rancher in Odessa who grew up in Largo. He has played saxophone since 5th grade and through college in concert and jazz bands.
