Human Trainer Smooths Out the 'Ruff' Parts of Dog Ownership

The Carrollwood resident trains clients one-on-one to be better pet owners.

KD Mathews was petrified of dogs as a child. So naturally, he grew up to be a dog trainer. Well, not exactly. Mathews has a different approach when it comes to helping his clients. He trains dogs' humans. A lifelong animal enthusiast and self-declared “nerd,” Mathews, who lives in Carrollwood, said his fear of dogs, which stemmed from an encounter in early childhood, fueled his interest in learning about them. At age 15, he got his first dog. But it wasn’t long before he understood how ill-equipped he was to handle dog ownership, despite all of the research on training he had done, Mathews said. “When my parents had enough poop in the house, destroyed furniture, walls, and incessant barking, I was left with a painful option that many …

Meal Delivery Business Launches for Busy Community

Dine In 2Nite offers variety of fresh meal choices for individuals and families.

In June, Carrollwood resident Jeff Donnel launched Dine In 2Nite, an innovative take on catering, offering the luxury of a private chef lifestyle, but without the sizeable expense. Having worked for years in the corporate world, Donnel was looking for a business that he could own and operate when he discovered Dine In 2Nite. Bulk meal and frozen meal delivery have been around for over a decade, but the San Diego-based Dine In 2Nite franchise premise of preparing an individual fresh meal each day and delivering that evening was a new concept.  “I just fell in love with the idea,” Donnel said. “I became its first franchisee. It’s a great service and a great business model. I think once we get established, it’s going to be very successful.” …

Anti-Walmart Group Packs Monday Night's Zoning Meeting

The zoning master will release his recommendations regarding the case early next month.

About 200 people wearing red showed up at Monday night's Hillsborough County's Zoning Hearing Master meeting. The red symbolized their dislike for a proposed rezoning of Floyd Road. The crowd's stance was clear: No Walmart. "Our biggest issue on the eastern side is the traffic," said Original Carrollwood resident Mark Tempest, a member of 813CARe, an organization consisting of several neighborhoods and businesses opposed to the Walmart.  Tempest said the project would "exaggerate and increase existing cut-through traffic." "We've been inundated with traffic calming and I don't think our neighborhood can tolerate any more traffic calming to support this specific proposal," Tempest said. "There's something wrong with the system if this kind …

God help us! It's not the Wal-Mart that bothers me but another damn traffic light. I am sick to death of all the unmanaged traffic lights in this county. So many that turn red on thoroughfares when there is not a car in sight on the side roads. I used to have to travel 8.6 miles to work and I counted 18 traffic lights and it took me twenty minutes to navigate on average. I stand in opposition!   more ›

Happy "30th" To The Tampa Pitcher Show

The Tampa Pitcher Show continues to evolve to meet its patrons needs.

When the Valenti family opened in 1982, The Tampa Pitcher Show was not on the corner of a strip shopping center. It was the only free-standing building that far north on Dale Mabry Highway. “We were the furthest thing north on Dale Mabry that wasn’t woods,” said Wayne Valenti. As time passed, a shopping plaza and Carrollwood developed around them.  Wayne's daughter, Karianne Valenti, grew up in the theater and remembered at five years old urging a construction worker to get back to work. “We were leaving and he was sitting on a stool by the door and I said 'Hurry up.' We want to start our business," she recalled. Cindy Valenti smiled at her daughter behind the bar on a recent day at the Tampa Pitcher show and added, "And she’s been bossy …
