Public Meeting to Discuss Vehicle Access to Whole Foods

The meeting will be held on Feb. 21

Hillsborough County will hold a public meeting to discuss proposed improvements to the road medians on Northdale Boulevard from Dale Mabry Highway to Premiere Drive in northern Hillsborough County. The proposed improvements would provide safe access to the Whole Foods Market that is currently being constructed at the former call center site along the road, as well as improve safe turning along Northdale Boulevard. The median at Altimira Drive is proposed to be modified to eliminate northbound left turns from Altimira Drive onto Northdale Boulevard. A westbound left turn into the Whole Foods Store also is proposed to be added through the median modifications. Construction of these improvements is planned to begin during the summer of 2012 …

Alba Coffee Closing This Weekend

The coffee shop opened last May

Less than a year after opening in a shopping center in one of Carrollwood's busiest intersections, Alba Coffee is closing its doors on Sunday. Ian Craig, owner of the family-owned coffee shop, said high rent along Dale Mabry has forced out small businesses like his, citing the recent closure of a sandwich shop nearby as another example. "The rent here is very expensive for a small, independent coffee shop," he said. "You can't keep it open without making money." The coffee shop at 15000 N. Dale Mabry Highway opened last May between Great Clips and a Ross clothing store, allowing residents an opportunity to patronize an independent business on a busy thoroughfare known for big box retail stores and popular chains like Starbucks. Whole Foods Market Headed to Northdale

The health food store will be Tampa's second location when it opens in late 2012; the first is at 1548 N. Dale Mabry Highway

In less than a year, Northdale will be home to a popular business that will provide another food option for health-conscious north Tampa residents, bringing additional traffic on an already busy roadway. Whole Foods Market is slated to open in late 2012 on Northdale Boulevard between the Northdale Executive Center and SunTrust Bank, not far from the intersection of Northdale Boulevard and North Dale Mabry Highway. The store, which offers natural and organic items such as quinoa, flax seed and Greek yogurt, has locals talking. Some are unsure if the new store will hurt businesses on the other side of Northdale Boulevard, while others say it's a welcomed addition to the area. Meanwhile, county officials say they are prepared for an …

Battle of the Burgers

Carrollwood is bursting at the seams with burger joints. Which one do you like the most?

Welcome to burgerland. Take a look around Carrollwood, and one thing is becoming clear: We love our beef. In the past year two years, Carrollwood has seen the opening of three establishments boasting "burger" as part of its name, making the community a culinary hotbed for all-American favorites like fresh beef, french fries and double chocolate shakes. The first was Burger Monger, which opened its doors at 10412 N. Dale Mabry Highway in May of 2010. Then, Burger 21 expanded its reach - there was already one in Westchase - by opening at 11777 N. Dale Mabry Highway in October. Then, a month later, BGR The Burger Joint sprouted a few miles away at 12913 N. Dale Mabry Highway. These aren't your run-of-the-mill burgers, either. They boast names…

The Curse of Stall Road and Dale Mabry

The intersection of Stall Road and North Dale Mabry has seen its share of businesses come and go. Patch looked into why.

For years, the Carrollwood intersection of Stall Road and North Dale Mabry Highway has seen businesses prosper or fail. A closing business, whether big box or mom-and-pop, isn't much of a surprise to local communities, considering the economic downturn. But at that intersection, there's been a recent exodus that included two chain restaurants and a bookstore gone bankrupt, leaving behind an abandoned aesthetic in the midst of bustling North Dale Mabry Highway's wide array of retail and restaurants. While developers are eager to acquire the trio of vacant properties along north Tampa's busiest roadway where Denny's, Perkins and Borders bookstore once stood, Carrollwood residents are left to wonder: Is the intersection of Stall Road and …

Maybe the church could have some spaghetti dinners some nights. Or, pancake breakfasts, anything but something. But, maybe there's a problem with signage too. I have no idea what to suggest. Seems it's all been tried.   more ›

CABA Hosting Holiday Tree Lighting

The event will be on Saturday

After a five-year hiatus, the Carrollwood Area Business Association is bringing back its holiday tree lighting. The event, sponsored by the network of over 300 Tampa Bay business owners, will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Village Center (the northwest corner of North Dale Mabry Highway and South Village Drive). The free family-themed event is open to everyone, including non-CABA members. Childrens choirs, Santa Claus, dance troupes, holiday music and children's activities are just part of the festivities. "It's something we want to put on to give back to the community that has helped us," said Kristin Rink Votta of Fitness Tek, who is on CABA's board of directors for its membership committee. The event was hosted by …

So glad to see CABA brought this back! This used to be one of my favorite things to cover in Carrollwood. Does anyone out there have a great memory of a Christmas tree lighting from the past?   more ›
