Gaither Cowboys Still Make Regionals After Losing 1-3 to Sickles

Despite an impressive first half performance, the Gaither Cowboys came up short in the second half

Coach Eric Sims was not concerned. His veteran squad has been there, done that. Last year, the Gaither Cowboys battled Sickles in the very same situation. When asked what was the most important thing to take out of this game, his reply was simple. “Health. Whether we travel or not, we’re both still playing (at regionals)," he said. He was also confident in his team’s ability to take care of business. “We need to play our game," he said. "Play sound defense, and our goal scorers will take care of the rest." Both sides felt each other out in the early going. Thirty-six minutes in, they had both taken shots on goal, but neither shot was a real threat. Neither side controlled the ball too much. There were some great battles for possession at …

Gaither Cowboys Beat Freedom 2-0, Advance to District 9 Finals

The Cowboys play Sickles tonight

It had been nine days since the Cowboys had played a game. When asked if his team might be rusty, Coach Sims replied, “We had a good week of practice. We’ve been working hard, keeping them active. At this point in the season, if you don’t have it now, you’re not gonna have it." All that stood between Gaither and yet another appearance at regionals was a scrappy Freedom team that torched Leto the night before. What did they need to do to get past Freedom? “Work harder than they do,” was Sims’ response. And that’s just what they did. The Cowboys came out with guns blazing. In the first minute of action, Jacob Snidle played a free kick from the midfield stripe that was so deadly accurate, it careened off the crossbar. This presented an …

Gaither High Soccer: The Stakes Keep Getting Higher

Boys team plays tonight; team defends their record

There are no more “ gimmie” games on the schedule. There is no “ warm-up” tournament. At this point, it's do or die for the Gaither Cowboys soccer squad. They will get another day of practice and another day to think about it after the downpour on Tuesday pushed all District 9 action back one day. The Cowboys will await the winner of Thursday night's game between Freedom and Leto. Then, they will square off at 8 p.m. Thursday at King High School. The Cowboys crushed Leto and Freedom in regular season action this year, but they must avoid a stumble to advance to regionals. They hit a major bump in the road at The Wharton Invitational, dropping a 2-5 decision to Durant. They must win Thursday night to secure a spot in the 2011 Regional …

Playoffs Preview: Gaither Cowboys Defend Their No. 1 Seed

The Cowboys will take their undefeated district record into next week’s playoffs at King High School

Despite a lackluster performance versus Durant in their first game at the Wharton Invitational, the Gaither Cowboys took their last two group games against Strawberry Crest and Hillsborough to wrap up the regular season. Head Coach Eric Sims was pleased overall, saying “It’s good preparation for districts. Hillsborough might be someone we face (in the playoffs), so we’re happy to get a look at them." The Cowboys have the best record and are the number one seed in the district, so they will sit out the first round on Tuesday and await the winner between Freedom and Hillsborough high schools. Gaither trounced Freedom in November to the tune of 5-1, with Zach Wheeler accounting for three of the five goals. They have downed Hillsborough twice …
