Artists Corner: Isabel Aarons

We profile artists whose work has been shown at the Life Enrichment Center in Forest Hills and the Carrollwood Cultural Center in Carrollwood

Between the Carrollwood Cultural Center and the Life Enrichment Center, one thing is clear: North Tampa is a community full of talented artists. We recently talked to one named Isabel Aarons, whose work has been shown at the LEC, about how she got her start and how the community can see her work. Patch: How did you get started as an artist? Aarons: This goes way back from when I was a little girl. You couldn't leave a stray piece of paper around the house, as I would be drawing constantly. I wanted to go to art school after I graduated High School, in Canada, Vancouver, British Columbia.  However, my father, who was my financier, decided that he would rather pay tuition at the university instead of art school   This set me up for …

Artists Corner: Polly Boston

We talk to local artists whose work has been displayed at the Carrollwood Cultural Center

Stop by the Carrollwood Cultural Center, and one thing is clear: local artists are making their mark in Tampa Bay. One of those artists is Pauline Boston, known by many as "Polly," who received honorable mention in a recent show at the Center and has had work displayed there, too. We talked to her about how she got her start and how the public can see her work. Patch: How did you get your start as an artist? Boston: As long as I can remember, I have loved to draw and to play the piano.  I decided to study music rather than art in college. I taught music in public school for 22 years. Artists Corner: Stuart Dwork

Patch talked to an artist who has work displayed at the Carrollwood Cultural Center

Stop by the Carrollwood Cultural Center, and one thing is clear: local artists are making their mark in Tampa Bay. One of those artists is Stuart Dwork, a Clearwater resident who has displayed his artwork at the Center, 4537 Lowell Road, for years. Dwork, who currently has work on display this month during the Center's current show, Winter Wonderland, talked to Patch about how he got started as an artist and what his influences are. North Tampa Library Show Highlights Work Of Life Enrichment Artists

Jan Platt Traveling Art Show features 16 paintings in various media, and will be on display through the end of September at the library.

Local artists are taking a bow this month at Carrollwood’s North Tampa Branch Library where their work is being showcased in the Jan Platt Traveling Art Show. The show includes 16 paintings in various media, and will be on display through the end of September at the library, 8916 North Boulevard. A traveling exhibition, the show features art work by members of the Life Enrichment Center and is named in honor of the center’s board member and long-time Hillsborough County commissioner Jan Kaminis Platt. The name is fitting, says Ronna Metcalf, executive director of the center, 9704 North Boulevard. “Jan would always comment on the quality of the artwork the students were creating when she would come to board meetings at the center," said …

Senior Spring Fling and Painting/Craft Festival to be Held Tuesday

Circus themed event will feature visual, textile and performance art, as well as games and food

Are you a senior citizen looking for something fun to do? On Tuesday, Hillsborough County’s Family and Aging Services Department will host the Senior Spring Fling and Painting/Craft Festival. The event will last from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will be held at the University Community Center, at 14013 N. 22nd Street. The theme for this year’s festival will be “Life is a Circus," and admission is free. The annual art show, which started over 30 years ago, will feature senior participants who are at least 60 or older working in a variety of media. Amy Carrier, from the Family and Aging Services Department, described some of the awards that will be presented. “There will be cash prizes for first, second, third place and Honorable Mention awards…
