A total of 44 teams have signed up so far for the April 12 event at Chamberlain High School.
The clock is running out for the nearly 430 participants who have signed up to battle cancer on the local level by raising awareness and funding for the American Cancer Society. The Relay For Life of Carrollwood gets under way April 12 at 6 p.m. on the grounds of Chamberlain High School, 9401 North Blvd. And while the event isn’t until Friday, participants have been hard at work raising money in advance of big day. They’ve been so busy, in fact, the 44 teams who are signed up for this year’s fundraiser have logged almost $30,000 in donations and they’re not done yet. Community members who want to get involved are invited to attend a committee rally today for Relay for Life.
Last year, Relay for Life of Carrollwood raised $58,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year, the goal is $75,000. To get things off the ground for the next Relay for Life on May 3 and 4 of 2013, organizers are hosting a committee rally from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today (Sept. 6) at the Carrollwood Cultural Center, 4537 Lowell Road. Anyone interested in joining this year's committee is invited come, said Kristin Rink Votta, team development chair and owner of Fitness-Tek Personal Training Studio. Funds raised allow the American Cancer Society to buy wigs for cancer patients, among other uses, she said. Men and women ages 30-65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are encouraged to enroll in Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), and can do so during three July events hosted by St. Joseph’s Hospitals: During the enrollment events, research participants will complete a questionnaire and give a small blood sample, along with height, weight and blood pressure information. The Annual Relay for Life of Carrollwood event was hosted by Gaither High School this weekend.
The 2012 Relay for Life of Carrollwood was hosted by Gaither High School starting with the opening ceremonies on Friday, May 11 at 6 p.m. It concluded Saturday at noon. Local businesses, the Carrollwood Area Business Association, area residents and student organizations from Gaither and Chamberlain high school showed their support for the many cancer survivors who attended the event and contributed to the overall fund raising. This year, there were 625 individuals and 44 teams participated in this event to help support the American Cancer Society. Next week, the Carrollwood community will gather for Relay for Life, a fundraiser held at Gaither High School sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Aside from the overnight relay, food and games, organizers of Relay for Life are staying true to the purpose of the event by administering a cancer study called CPS-3. Rock for a Cure will raise money for research and honor cancer survivors.
On May 13, the American Cancer Society and the Carrollwood Area Business Association will host Relay for Life at Gaither High School, 16200 N. Dale Mabry Highway. The event will help raise money to find a cure for cancer. Relay for Life is an 18-hour marathon during which participating teams will have one member walking or running around the Gaither High School track at all times. The relay benefit symbolizes the fight against an enemy that never sleeps or rests. The event will last from 6 p.m. on Friday, May 13 until noon on Saturday, May 14.
