Update: Bomb Threat Reported at USF’s Beta Hall

An all-clear has been given at this time.

Update May 19 5:05 p.m.: Lt. Charlotte Domingo from the USF Police Department has confirmed the investigation at Beta Hall was related to a bomb threat. Domingo said the police department received an anonymous threat around 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, and immediately set up a perimeter around the building. The threat also led to a full search inside and outside of Beta Hall, which is currently unoccupied for the summer term. “No explosives” were found, Domingo said. A criminal investigation, however, continues. Earlier: A possible bomb threat at the University of South Florida’s Beta Hall has sparked an investigation on campus. The men, who live off of Sheldon Road, were arrested May 14 during a Pasco sweep targeting those who sell synthetic drugs.

Imagine sitting down to a nice family dinner of beans, rice and beetles. Yes, you read that right – beetles! The United Nations is touting the benefits of edible bugs as a way to combat hunger, pollution and global warming, according to The Huffington Post. The agency says bugs are high in protein and low in fat. Their cultivation is easier on the environment, too, and they’re never in short supply. There are more than 1,900 different insect species people can readily consume, according to the Post. These include caterpillars and beetles. About 2 billion people already eat insects on a regular basis, the U.N. reports. So Carrollwood and Northdale, would you forego that tasty burger or piece of fried chicken for a big helping of bugs? Roxy, a 2 year old cat with wide eyes, is in search of a forever home.

Roxy is this week's featured adoptable pet. She is currently being cared for in a Tampa Bay St. Francis Animal Rescue foster home until a permanent home becomes available. She is 2 years old and loves to be brushed. Here's a special message from Roxy: "Hi y'all. Not sure how this all happened, but somehow I wound up back at the county shelter. I thought I was in my forever home, but I guess they had allergies or something and decided it was the county shelter for me. Luckily a St. Francis volunteer saw me at the shelter and saw that I was one of theirs, and made arrangements to come pick me up. Veterans Expressway Lane, Ramp Closings Coming

Carrollwood and Northdale motorists who use the Veterans Expressway to get around might want to take note: a few changes are coming in the week ahead, May 19-25. According to Florida’s Turnpike, motorists should be alert for possible closings on such adjoining roadways as Waters Avenue, Anderson Road, Linebaugh Avenue and Henderson Road. The expressway project involves 11 miles of the roadway and includes transforming the road from four to eight lanes to alleviate congestion, Turnpike officials say.
