I use to feel the way you did. Personality, the business class and particularly in Orange County hasRead More hired them for jobs for over 30 years. In fact some of the stats by the US Census while lots of conservatives will not agree with is some of the illegal immigrants left Santa Ana and Anaheim since they couldn't find jobs. The Census shows OC aging and Hispanic immigrants tend to make the county younger but OC is now about 37 years old. Hispanic immigrants tend to have more children and bring the average down. The US Census shows a dropped from 2.8 in 2007 to 2.12 now. Granted, there are still lots of illegal immigrants in the OC but at one time they were over 300,000. As for conservatives Texas has almost as bad a problem since business there hired them to do construction and service jobs like dishwashers and fast food. Also, OC kid population has been dropping which is why I think at least some illegals went home or to other parts of California or out of state. The 5 and under population is now onl 6.1 which is slightly below the US average and the under 18 population is about 23.3 also under the national average.. In fact Hispanics were more foreign born as a percentage of the workforce under George W Bush in 2007 when they represent 56 and are now at 49. The only reason I believe that illegal Hispanics are coming and going particularly from Mexico is the birthrate is dropping they tend to have near the 3.0 figure in the US while native born Hispanics are closer to 2.0.

The Central American kids crisis is a law passed under George W Bush because of human trafficking itRead More went to far in the direction of protecting them. On the other hand, Mexico we can just return the kids without having a court hearing that the 2008 act made different for the Central American kids. The hypercracy over many Republicans on immigration allowed companies like here in Orange County and Texas to hire them but pushed border control when probably getting rid of the job magnet a long time ago even under George W Bush's first term would have solved the problem. In Orange County that met not hiring every maid, landscaper, car washer, fast food worker, day labor, low skilled assembly worker usually in garment work or sometimes medical devices or aerospace assembly, and prep cooks. These are just some of the jobs that have been done by illegal immigrants in Orange County the passed 30 years. They entered Santa Ana in the late 1970's and started with simple factory work that is now in Mexico because of NAFTA.

I do hope they(Orlando)gets the problems worked out with this company. I think the Megabus is aRead More good idea.
Jack Sprat July 12, 2014 at 12:33 pm
Megabus is the solution to the "problem" the high speed rail was supposed to solve. ExceptRead More it is about $5 BILLION less costly to taxpayers and the fare is a lot less expensive than we would have paid to ride the HSR in about ten years.

Get off here commenting and parent your kids, if you have them. If not, try being a parent for aRead More day! Yall sound like people from the 70's about rock music! Get over yourself! Good grief. Commenting on comics, a new age.

I'm pretty sure that most comics aimed at an adult audience are intended to stir up conversation,Read More otherwise why would the Patch (an interactive blog posting type of news site that can only profit if they can show advertisers how many people visit their site and how involved their readers are with the content) post comics at all if they don't expect anyone to have a reaction? The entire premise behind Patch is to create an interactive news experience .... sheesh. It is funny to hear people without children who say that what is wrong with the world today is that we lack the values and parenting style of the older generation but when the parents actually try to take a stand on an issue that they believe is important, they are again criticized for not embracing the changing times and the role of technology. It's b.s. - kids are still kids and they will get a good education regardless of whether they are reading their textbooks on paper or on a tablet computer. They can read off a black board, white board or smart board. The content delivery is not nearly as important as the content itself and the belief that there are real people in their lives who are there to support them along the way. How can you get the feeling of real people supporting you if every person you interact with is communicating to you electronically? It just isn't normal and our entire society is to blame.... But, you can just laugh at the funny pictures, too. I won't criticize you for your choice to miss the point of it.

I agree with Debbie. With all our shelters full and the absurd puppy mills this is a great move...IRead More wish our city council was so smart. A temporary ban on breeding without a license until our shelter animals are homed would take it a step farther. KUDOS!

Hats off to them. Courageous decision by the city council....
Kathy S Woody July 13, 2014 at 01:26 am
I am all for getting rid of Puppy Mills! But is this the right way to do it? Why don't you ban puppyRead More mills? Why don't you make it illegal for pet stores to purchase puppies from puppy mills. Make a harsh punishment if they disobey the law! Make a harsh punishment if you get caught running a puppy mill. Oh, I forgot! The only way our government, (city, state, & federal,) know how to govern is to punish the innocent, law abiding citizens, & give the criminals free reign. Or "We have a quick solution, we'll just punish them all!" When are we gonna take this country back & ban the government!

After another baby dies after being left in a hot car, a mother recounts a mistake that might have cost her daughter's life.
Michael Marr July 13, 2014 at 07:46 pm
Forgetting how you got to work, or leaving a baby in a car, are indicators of problems with shortRead More term memory. Short term memory has to do with what you were doing in the last 30 to 60 seconds. These lapses act like a memory wipe -- you know, you get in your car, then go back in the house and then say, why did I come back in the house?
porter gladstone III July 13, 2014 at 08:02 pm
So , RDF you think that there should be consequences for actions. Yes , so do I. And I think I canRead More speak for most everyone else arguing similarly to me, that they also believe that there should be consequences. My belief however is that we all make mistakes in life. Some have more severe results as is in this case. My reaction is more about how you feel that it can never happen to you, and how this can only happen to stupid irresponsible people and that it's obvious to you given what occurred. I'll provide one more piece of anecdotal evidence that I dont think will be viewed as unique: I have a friend who had 4 kids. 3 went on to become successful professionals, and one became a heroin addict. My question to you is my friend a good parent or a bad parent? Is he an idiot or something else? For me it's not as easy an equation. But since you are very good at making determinations, I'll listen to your judgment. (and then after that, I hope your kids turn out the way you hope as sometimes , as they say , shit happens.
PO'G July 13, 2014 at 09:27 pm
are you implying that successful professionals can't be assholes?

Manatee County needs to cut their losses and correct the problem going forward, not backward. MostRead More of those people probably can't afford to pay back all that money! Raises have been scarce everywhere, I am sure all of them waited patiently and deserved the raise when they finally got it. Only to have their pay adjusted and owe money? That stinks, and not to mention how many of them made a life decision based on getting a raise that may now be a complete disaster, like buying a car, or a house, putting kids in daycare etc? The fact that going back on the deal was ever even mentioned is a sad representation of the world today , just have them fulfill the final requirements!
Susan Stewart Snyder July 9, 2014 at 09:21 pm
The article states that the course wasn't completed. Why not let the workers keep the raises ifRead More they complete it within 30 days. That would be a win-win situation.
Dona Lee July 11, 2014 at 07:27 pm
I totally agree with Kim and Susan. They earned these raises and now some bean counter wants to notRead More only take them away but retroactively? No way. No hedging Manatee. You made a committment, they fulfilled the stated requirements. You don't get to change the rules. And Gene and Canary--Florida doesn't have Unions. This is a nonunion state and that means unions have no teeth here. An employer cannot be forced to abide by any union demands.

Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs stats DO NOT include accidents caused by an impairedRead More driver who did something stupid, caused an accident, but wasn't in the accident. Cutting someone off, weaving in high-speed traffic, crossing center line, stopping short, running stop signs/street lights, etc. can cause an accident without offending party being in the accident. These drivers are oblivious and merrily drive on their way.
