Pet Parents Can Go Green, Too!

Six tips for going green with your pet.

Celebrate Earth Day by adopting these green tips for you and your pet. By making a few simple lifestyle choices, you'll be on your way to living the green life and saving our planet.

  1. Recycled Pets Only! Don't buy your pet from a breeder or pet store. There are so many unwanted pets. Visit Humane Society of Tampa Bay or your favorite local rescue. If you are patient enough, you can find just about any type of pet you want. You can also offer to be a foster home for a rescue group. They are always in need of good homes who can offer a loving environment for a pet who is searching for its forever home. Most rescue groups provide for necessary veterinary care and supplies - you just provide the home and the love.
  2. Get your pet FIXED! Spaying or neutering your pet is probably the single most important way to play an active role in reducing pet overpopulation. Did you know that county tax dollars are used to euthanize pets due to overpopulation? Is your pet already fixed? Then spread the news and tell all your friends, family and neighbors to get their pets fixed, too!
  3. Feed your pet an all natural diet. Choose your pet's food and treats wisely. Don't forget to read the labels. Look for wholesome ingredients with no by-products or preservatives. Make a conscious effort to buy healthy food and treats and only buy products that are "Made in USA."
  4. Eco-friendly toys and supplies please! Buy toys and products that are made from recycled or reused materials, are Made in the USA and are good for our planet. Buy from local companies who give back to the community.
  5. Pick up your pet's poop! It is so important to pick up your pet's poop. This helps stop the spread of parasites and other diseases and it helps to keep our streets looking clean and smelling good. Use only biodegradeable poop baggies and be sure to throw your pet's poop in proper trash receptacles.
  6. Keep Training because happy pets mean a happy planet. Does your doggie have issues? Find a positive trainer to work with you to help resolve his issues. Pets are surrendered every day due to issues that can be resolved easily through proper training and positive reinforcement. Is your pet already trained? You'd be surprised how much fun it can be to enroll in a group class with your pet.

Going green is a lifestyle choice. To get good at it you have to ReTHINK the way you live every single day. So remember to: ReDUCE. ReUSE. ReCYCLE. even when it comes to your beloved pet. Stay Groovy, Carrollwood and Northdale!
