Coconut Oil: Top 5 Reasons To Feed it To Your Dog

Coconut oil may greatly improve your dog's chronic health conditions. I know what you're thinking, "What!?! Coconut oil for dogs?" Okay skeptic, read on and then give it a try ...

Did you know that coconut oil has many health benefits? Not only for you, but for your dog as well. There are an endless number of articles you can find online, in health journals and magazines all discussing the many benefits of coconut oil. All you have to do is look. Also, in the five years I've owned a holistic pet boutique, I have not come across any other single item that provides as many health benefits as coconut oil.

Often referred to as the "miracle oil," coconut oil derives it's health benefits mainly from lauric acid. Coconut oil is made up of about 50 percent lauric acid. The only other place in nature where you can find lauric acid is in human breast milk. While coconut has a high fat content, the fatty acids are primarily medium-chain triglycerides, which the body is able to assimilate well.

So, whether your dog suffers from poor skin and coat, digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBD) or pancreatitis, bad doggie breath or other stinky dog odors, you should consider adding coconut oil to your dog's food bowl.

Here are my top five picks why coconut oil is good for your dog:

  1. It improves the condition of your dog's skin and coat. Think of it as a luxurious moisturizer that works "from the inside out."
  2. It has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, so it promotes healing and reduces the chance of infections.
  3. It improves digestion and nutrient absorbtion, so it helps your dog's body use more of the nutrients he eats from his bowl.
  4. It helps to reduce or eliminate all sorts of fowl doggy odors.
  5. It increases energy and improves mobility in dogs who suffer from arthritis or other joint problems. It even helps to maintain proper weight!

NOTE: I do have a couple of doggy customers who happen to be allergic to coconut. Remember, allergies are just the body's way of letting you know the immune system is out of whack. So, let's work on getting those immune systems working the way they should!
