Earlier this week Holtz’s record with the Bulls had The Tampa Tribune speculating that change was in the air at USF. With an overall 16-21 record in Holtz’s three years at USF, it was clear something had to give.

Fans, it was reasoned, wanted to see an immediate change either on the sidelines or the scoreboard. Today’s announcement means that USF officials have decided to make the change on the sidelines in hopes of a scoreboard improvement soon.

While some wanted to see Holtz go, he was a popular figure in the area. Temple Terrace even recognized Holtz with a day in his honor.

Holtz’s contract had been extended to 2017. Now USF will likely have to pay a $2.5 million buyout in order to seek out a new coach.
