Lady Cowboys Fall 5-7 in Close Contest With Sickles Gryphons

The girls got blown out in the first two innings, but rallied down the stretch but came up two runs short.

The Lady Cowboys are in the midst of a four-game losing streak that has seen early-inning run totals create insurmountable obstacles, even with their late-game rallies.

“We’ve got to work with fundamentals. That’s what it comes down to,” said Coach Jerry Murray.

The Gaither girls got rocked by Sickles in the first two innings. Junior pitcher Nichole Lewis drove in three runs in the first and Ashley Weisman added more to push the lead out to 5-0 Sickles.

The Lady Cowboys didn’t give up. They scored a run in the third inning, and Aja Osborne added another in the fourth to make it 2-5.

Sickles came back strong in the sixth. Chelsea Armstrong got a lead-off double and Giselle Anderson hit a homerun to push the lead out to 7-2 Sickles.

Again, the Gaither girls bounced back. Alisha Rodriguez hit a lead-off double and Lena Rovellada drove her in. Some poor fielding and good base-running from Gaither sent two more runs across the plate. The Lady Cowboys had closed it to 5-7 going into the seventh.

Lena Rovellada had a chance to tie or win the game in a pressure spot with two outs and runners on second and third. Everyone held their breath as Lena drove the ball deep into left field. Unfortunately, the ball did not have enough air under it and Junior Kaitlyn Ficarrotta was able to make the catch to end the game.

The Lady Cowboys drop to 3-7 but are still 3-3 in District 9. They will travel to Leto and then to Jefferson before coming home March 22nd to take on Freedom
