Cowboys Edge Gryphons 5-4 in Extra Innings

Sickles scored two in the sixth to go up by a run but Gaither equalized in the bottom of the seventh then took it in the eighth.

Senior Zach Jackson played well tonight, which started when he drove in the first run of the game with a double to left field. He would eventually score the winning run.

Gaither opened it up in the bottom of the third with a Tyler Siegel single to center that drove in the third run for the Cowboys.

Sickles came back with one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it 3-2. Then, Isaac Southers and Ivan Perez each drove in a run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-4, with Sickles taking the lead.

The Cowboys came back with some good baseball in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, second baseman Cody Robinson made a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third.

Then, Edward Pastrana was hit by a pitch and took first base. Matt Frey knocked a grounder to shortstop. It looked like a double play would end the game for the Cowboys, but Frey beat out the throw to first. The runner scored from third and sent the game into the eighth inning.

Zach Jackson got on base to start the eighth inning and stole second base. Jose Gonzalez got up and blasted a shot that went all the way to the center field wall. Jackson scored from second and iced the game for Gaither.

“We would hate to play a game like that and lose,” said Gaither coach Frank Permuy. “We’ve been hitting, just not at clutch times like tonight. It feels good.”

The Cowboys move up to 6-1, 3-1 in District 9. They head into a very tough road trip with Leto, undefeated Jefferson and Newsome before returning home March 22 for a re-match against Freedom, their only loss on the year.
