Gaither Soccer Heats Up as Winter Break Nears

Soccer players are looking forward to the Wharton Invitational as other sports wind down for the winter break.

GAITHER:

Soccer:

Boys - The Cowboys improved to 6-2-1 after knocking off Alonso 3-2 on Dec. 9. Senior forward Jonas Bukh has pushed his goal total up to nine. Bukh leads District 8 in goals and the Cowboys are one game behind Steinbrenner for the lead in the district.

They took out Wiregrass Ranch 1-0 on Tuesday night. Senior captain Jacob Snidle took a step up from his center back position and played midfield, scoring Gaither's lone goal. The Cowboys head into the Wharton Invitational over the weekend and into next week.

"The Wharton Invitational is a good chance for them to play a lot of good teams in a short period of time," said head coach Eric Sims. "It's a good setup for districts."

Girls - The Lady Cowboys dropped their last road game to Alonso 4-2. On Tuesday night, they dropped a 2-0 decision to Wiregrass Ranch. The girls pressed the action all night and sophomore Taylor Meek got a few shots on goal but the effort fell short as their record dips to 5-6-1 going into the break. They are still 2-2 in District 8 and in a third place tie with Wiregrass Ranch.

"We just aren't coming together as a team, yet," said head coach Trevor Scott. "Our young player and our core players are playing well, we're just not closing on opportunities."

Basketball:

Boys - The boys finally got one in the win column Monday night as they defeated Middleton 59-46. They improve to just (1-5, 0-3 Class 7A District 9) but hope to build on their recent success.

Girls - The girls have not fared much better. They also scored a 46-40 win over Middleton and improved to (3-8, 0-3 Class 7A District 9). A tough road lies ahead for head coach Michelle Love and the Lady Cowboys

Wrestling:

The Cowboys head to Wharton High School on Wednesday to wrestle to Wildcats.

CARROLLWOOD DAY SCHOOL:

Soccer:

Girls - The girls are in the midst of a two-game skid, at Tampa Prep and then a 3-2 loss to Bishop MacLaughlin. They are still 6-2 but the 3-2 1A District 7 record lands them in the middle of the pack. They resume play Jan. 5 at home against Seffner Christian.

Boys - The boys halted a losing streak by forcing a 0-0 draw against Calvary Christian on Dec. 8. Then they were blown out 6-0 by Seffner Christian. The boys close out 2011 against Citrus Park Christian and don't have another game until January.
