Cowboy football extended its Cinderella season with a last Friday. The Cowboys overcame a slew of miscues and turnovers on the back of great defense and a career game for senior receiver Carlo Perello.

"I was pleading with coach to get me the ball all week," said Perello. "I felt like I could get something done that night."

In the game, Perello gained 175 yards and caught two long touchdown passes; the Cowboys only two touchdowns.

The win puts the Cowboys in the regional finals; a situation they have only matched once in school history. They will have to travel to take on perennial powerhouse Lakeland on Friday night.

Lakeland comes in ranked ninth in Class 7A, while Gaither is 35th. The Cowboys are 9-3 coming off an ugly but gigantic win over Tech, while the Dreadnaughts are 12-0 coming off a 20-7 win over Osceola.

SOCCER:

The boys team is now 4-1 coming off a 3-1 loss to Monteverde Academy last Tuesday. The Cowboys have scored 14 goals in their first five games; junior midfielder Tarek Assaad leading the way with four.

The girls team improved to 3-3-1 after a 1-0 win over Sickles last week. The girls have scored 16 goals over their first seven games. Sophomores Kaitlyn McHenry and Taylor Meek along with junior Samantha Knowles all have four goals.

"We're really fast up front; I'm more of the skill and (Madison Henriquez) is more of the speed," said Meek.

BASKETBALL:

The boys team opens its season at Blake on Tuesday night.

The girls team fell to 1-4 after a loss to Dunnellon last week. The loss extends the streak to three. They travel to Blake Tuesday night with a chance to halt the skid.

Carrollwood Day:

SOCCER:

The boys team opens its season this week with home games against Academy at the Lakes and Shorecrest.

The girls team is 2-0 after a 4-0 win at Lake Mary Prep. They travel to Academy at the Lakes this week.

BASKETBALL:

The boys team is 0-2 after a 56-29 loss to Berkeley Prep last week. They play Brooks DeBartolo and Tampa Prep this week in an effort to even up the win column.

The girls team is still winless in its first three games. They will try to get back on track this week as they face Brooks DeBartolo and Tampa Prep.
