IDS-CC Students, Teachers Headed to Spain

The group of five students and two teachers leaves today

A group of students at Independent Day School-Corbett Campus are on their way to becoming global citizens when they make a trek to Spain today with two of their teachers.

The school, at 12015 Orange Grove Drive in Carrollwood, is participating in an educational swap with a dozen kids from their sister school, Colegios Ramon y Cajal in Madrid. The seventh and eighth grade IDS-CC students will return on March 23, and the fifth through eighth grade students from Spain will be in Carrollwood from March 26 until April 13.

The students from both schools will stay with host families from their sister schools and attend classes, said Sonia Morgan, a Spanish teacher who will be going on the trip.

"Children come and stay and become part of the IDS community," she said. "It's been very successful for the campus."

The sister school partnership began years ago, and allows students from both schools the opportunity to experience another culture, Morgan said. Students in grades 5 thorugh 8 apply, and the cost is about $2,600 to send a student, Morgan said.

During the trip, students will be able to reflect on what they're experiencing while working on their homework from IDS-CC, Morgan said.

The students will also be able to have fun during the trip.

"The kids go on excursions to historical cities, and they will get on double decker buses and go around," she said.

Odette Figueruelo, a Spanish teacher from Madrid who has been on the trip in previous years, said the trip last year was "life-changing."

"Going back and being able to share something I love so much with my students brings everything to life," she said. "It was personal and emotional."

Morgan said the trip allows students to make lasting connections.

"The friendship will be fostered forever," she said. "Also, being open to new things and enjoying the travel experience."
