Early Release Mondays Continue in Hillsborough Schools

Students will get out an hour early every Monday this school year.

Planning ahead for the upcoming start to the new school year? Be sure to prepare for a school day that’s an hour shorter every Monday.

All Hillsborough County schools will release students early each Monday throughout the 2012-13 school year. This routine was put into place last year and the school district has decided to continue it again this year, said Linda Cobbe, district spokeswoman.

“We started early release Mondays last school year to give teachers a little extra planning time since budget reductions required that all teachers have classes 6 out of 7 periods (middle and high),” Cobbe said. “Elementary teachers never had even that much planning time.”

The district did have early release days in earlier school years, but they weren’t necessarily on a set schedule.

“The first year we had early release days, there was no consistency, and parents asked that we schedule them on a regular basis on a certain day of the week,” Cobbe said.
