Walmart Attorneys Request Delay

Hillsborough County Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the proposed Walmart in Carrollwood.

Representatives for Walmart have asked Hillsborough County Commissioners to delay their vote on a proposed rezoning for a neighborhood grocery store at the corner of North Dale Mabry Highway and Floyd Road in Carrollwood.

A Wawa convenience store and gas station are also planned for the site.

The proposed rezoning request was suppose to be voted on by the commission at its Dec. 11 meeting. Attorneys for the retailer, however, have asked that the vote be taken at a later date - possibly in January.

Betty Robinson with Hillsborough County Growth and Management Department said Walmart attorneys had recently put in a "request for continuance."

Robinson said for now the continuance has not been granted.

"The reason for the continuance doesn't fall into regulatory circumstances," Robinson said.

"There's always the option for the applicant to make that request before the board," she added.

Robinson said the finalized Dec. 11 meeting agenda would likely be posted on the county's website late Friday and for now includes a request for a vote on the Walmart.

Carrollwood residents in opposition to the Walmart began circulating emails this week encouraging people to still attend the December meeting despite the request for continuance.

The group 813CARe has for months protested the proposed 10-acre development. The group has collected more than 2,500 letters, emails and petition signatures against the plan. In October, about 200 people showed up at a Hillsborough County Zoning meeting.

Greg Scott, an 813 member, said his group will continue its efforts and plans to keep its followers up to date on changes with the zoning request and vote.

"Keep it on the calendar for Dec. 11," Scott said to those following the issue. Opponents of the propsoal should also "keep their eyes on their emails."

I walk my dogs at Floyd and Dale Mabry and each week I pick up a garbage can full of tossed trash from Taco Bell, 7-11, boxes from discarded hot dogs from 7-11, beer cans, whiskey bottles, malt liqueur bottles, discarded water bottles, soft drink bottles, cigarette containers, and occasionally empty prescription bottles (with the labels torn off) and syringes from the "pharmacy" located there. Not to mention candy wrappers, the bags of McDonald's trash and I can't imagine how much more trash will be left in our neighborhood should yet another business locate there. There is already a Publix for the neighborhood; there is already a Walmart on Gunn, another Walmart at Bearrs and Dale Mabry. What is needed is a green area along Dale Mabry and the County of Hillsborough should purchase this land as a means of helping the environment and replenishing the aquifer. In 1970 Joni Mitchell wrote the song lyrics, "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot" when she saw what devastation had been done to Hawaii. Maybe we need to rethink anymore unnecessary paving.
