Carrollwood Commercial Trash Collection Gets Competitive

Hillsborough County officials say the time for Carrollwood businesses to start looking for new garbage pickup services is now.

It’s time for Carrollwood business owners to shop around.

That’s the message from Hillsborough County as it kicks off a whole new garbage collection program that enables commercial garbage customers to choose from three different hauling services for their garbage pickups. The county’s current contracts expire on Sept. 30 and that means businesses have to find a new hauler for their trash before the Oct. 1 start date.

The county spent a good part of 2012 getting input on the way it handles trash pickup. The result was an overhaul of the residential garbage pickup program called Automated 2-1-1.

The change also impacted commercial garbage customers in that Hillsborough selected three different haulers to handle pickups from businesses within its borders.

Here’s what business owners need to know about the changes:

  • They go into effect on Oct. 1.
  • Commercial garbage customers must choose one of the three approved county haulers by that Oct. 1 date.
  • All existing commercial garbage contracts become null and void when the county’s franchise agreements expire on Sept. 30.
  • Commercial customers are under no obligation to stay with their current vendor as the new county-level agreement goes into effect.
  • Commercial customers will have to fill out a new Hillsborough County Solid Waste Profile Form – even if a form is now on file – before services can begin under the new contract. Additional details about the form will be available soon, a county media release said.
  • The new contracts don’t apply to commercial recycling. Businesses are still free to contract with any hauler for this service even if they are not on the county’s list of three approved vendors.

Why should businesses start considering this in April if the changes don’t start until later this summer?

“This is a good time for them to ‘shop around’ among the three franchise collectors to determine the most competitive rates and agreement that best meets their needs,” the media release explained.

Here are the three haulers the county has approved for commercial garbage pickups:

  • Republic Services of Florida: 813-265-0292
  • Waste Management Inc. of Florida: 813-621-3053
  • Waste Services of Florida: 813-248-3802
