Update: Video Shows SUV Wanted in 4-Year-Old's Death

Tampa Police detectives are looking for the public's help to locate the SUV that 4-year-old Marterrance Albury fell from Sunday night.

Update July 21, 11:03 p.m.: A second surveillance video obtained by the Tampa Police Department has officers questioning just how Marterrance Albury, 4, died.

In an email to media, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said after viewing the video detectives are "questioning whether the child actually rolled out of the SUV as the 911 caller first believed or if the boy wandered into the street and was a victim of a hit and run."

Regardless, police are still seeking the driver of the SUV to obtain more information in the case.

Police say a surveillance camera caught the SUV on video and are now hoping someone in the Tampa Bay area recognizes the Ford Expedition in question. In an email to media, police department spokeswoman Laura McElroy said the SUV that Marterrance Albury fell or was pushed from is believed to be dark green, possibly black in color and is estimated to be a 2000-04 model.

While the investigation is still ongoing, some details have come to light in the incident that unfolded around 9:46 p.m. Sunday as a motorist watched a child fall out of the back passenger side of a green SUV, McElroy wrote in an earlier email to media.

That witness stopped and called 911, but the SUV drove away. When police arrived, it was discovered the boy had landed on his head and was subsequently run over by the back wheels of the vehicle. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he later died, McElroy wrote.

About a half hour after the accident, the boy’s 17-year-old brother approached police. He told them he couldn’t find his little brother. The child had been left in the teen’s care while their mother, Joantea Williams, was out for the evening.

The boy died outside his family’s apartment complex on North Florida Avenue, just north of 109th Avenue.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the police department at 813-231-6130 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS.
