Crime Watch: Halloween Safety Tips

Sheriff's office provides some insight on staying safe on Oct. 31

With fall in full swing and Halloween just a few weeks away, Dep. Chris DePolis of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office offered some tips on keeping your kids safe while trick or treating in the neighborhood:

  • Turn on exterior and interior lights to attract trick or treaters. Decorate your home with Halloween decorations.
  • Child costumes should be bright, flame retardant and highly visible. Have children carry a flashlight or glow stick so they can be seen easily.
  • Young children should be accompanied by a parent or trusted adult. Older kids should travel in groups.
  • Hand out any candy, store-wrapped foods or non-edible items like crayons in their original packaging.
  • Inspect all food items before allowing anyone to consume them. Adhere to the rule, "When in doubt, throw it out."
  • Remind your children to call 9-1-1 in case of emergency.
