Walmart, Dick’s Pull Assault Weapons: Is it Enough?

In light of the Newtown, Conn., shootings major retailers across the county are pulling certain assault weapons from their shelves. The National Rifle Association has even issued a statement that it’s ready to make “meaningful contributions.”

As the cry for tighter gun control laws sounds louder throughout America and right here in Tampa Bay, major retailers are reacting.

Walmart has announced plans to stop selling the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 Rifle through its online store.

That particular assault rifle is in the same family of guns as the one Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old shooter in the Newtown massacre, reportedly used in the massacre, the Huffington Post reports.

Dick’s Sporting Goods, which has a number of Tampa Bay area locations, has also announced a shift in its stocking preferences. That store has suspended the sale of some semi-automatic weapons from all stores in the chain.

In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown. Friday’s shooting left 20 children, all between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults, plus the shooter, dead.

“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community,” a statement on the Dick’s website said.

Locally, to pass a ban on assault weapons immediately. She joins a chorus of others, including President Barack Obama, who say now is the time to act.

The National Rifle Association has even ended its post-Newtown silence, issuing a vague statement that it is ready to make “meaningful contributions.” The Second Amendment rights lobbying group plans a press conference on Friday to elaborate on the statement.

Here’s what we’d like to know Tampa Bay: Do you think the actions of Walmart and Dick’s go far enough? Are politicians just saber rattling or do you think the time for an all-out ban has come? What would you consider a “meaningful contribution” from the NRA? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Guns are NEVER THE PROBLEM - It is always the folks holding the guns - pulling the trigger. And Shut up already about muskets and militias - the founders knew this government would one day need to be reset and if we had no weapons we would not be able to do what must be done. Is there a law that will keep anyone from speeding? Laws only work for people who OBEY laws - anytime you want to disobey a law you may do so - and so to those who are committed to breaking laws - laws taking weapons away only disarm the lawful citizen. Assault rifle bans are for idiots - I can do as much with a Browning lever action and a handful of magazines - none of which hold more than 4 rounds per clip. Sure I may need to change more often but the end result would be the same as if I had a 30 round magazine - most people who shoot understand. I understand it feels good to say Ban Assault Rifles - Better to end universal suffrage.

1 + 1 = 2. It's all in the math. Give an idiot an assault weapon and he/she will figure out that it's supposed to be used to kill lots of people, otherwise why have it! Next thing you know, shoppers will be bringing their assault weapons to Black Friday shopping events and slay everyone who either gets in their way, or someone who buys the very last "must have" toy from the shelf. Enough is enough. And to the posters above who have been having 'fun' with their cutesy posts, I say: maybe the next victim will be someone close to you so you'll get serious about this issue.

And I suppose you would use your Browning lever action with a handful of magazines on a kindergartener to rip through their tiny body because it would cause the same amount of damage. What a guy!

Johnny,
You have already lost your rights and personal liberties. So hmmmm, yeah already happened. Why do you think every phone call, text message, online search/interaction is recorded and stored by our government. Your movements with a cell phone have been tracked for approximately a decade. So what personal liberties are you protect from the tyrannical government right now. Are you already risen up?
Michael D. December 20, 2012 at 05:57 pm
Yes, it does only say it once, but the intention is clear:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

1+1=2. Give a liberal a tragedy and they'll use it to take away your rights.

Johnny,
What did G.W. Bush do with 9-11? Really, that is your statement.

Give a know-it-all a keyboard and they become an expert in sociology. You haven't a clue how this tragedy affected any one of us, so don't even try and pass judgment. You wouldn't even be close.
Johnny Guns December 20, 2012 at 08:29 pm
Actually that proves my point. Politicians have no respect for us. Disarm us and they never will.
Michael D. December 20, 2012 at 08:48 pm
Johnny,
The reason they don't is because we don't do anything about it with the most powerful voice we have. Our vote and our dollar. When is the last time the Nation has considered a candidate outside of the two major candidates running? Or honestly asked why Billions of dollars are going to campaigns, but not to fix the issues hurting our nation. We aren't in a crisis due to Left/Right, we are in a crisis because we as a society don't care.

Some people think straight jackets and drugs will keep everyone safe, how about accountability for ones actions, the person who pushes some one onto train tracks must take responsibility, http://www.schoolanduniversity.com/ the person who kills for pleasure, the person who kills must be accountable for their evil deeds, how hard is it to understand their are those who do not live by societies rules, that's why we have prisons, so we can be safe from killers, but no we must ban grandma from owning a fire arm, the school teacher from being able to defend themselves....think people, we must be able to defend Children at all costs, and I mean armed teachers!

lol Jaque Mioff, thanks for the break in this sadness.
Jacque Mioff December 25, 2012 at 10:41 pm
Well Sharon...it surely wasn't to diminish the memory of the victims as we're all just heartbroken over the loss of those kids and brave women over a senseless, preventable act. They are in our thoughts this Christmas along with their friends and families.

Dream on. Try punching holes in a tyrant with your assault rifel when he hits your street with Naplm & Agent Orange. Then again he may just hit you with artillary fired from jet aircraft that swoop down upon you. Maybe a few Anthrax canisters will be added to the small nukes he drops on you? Your assault weapons may kill a bunch of innocent people when crazys go on shooting sprees, but to fight a trrant? Maybe 250 years ago. Today? I don't think so.
michael mirra December 26, 2012 at 12:46 am
Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Guns just make it a LOT easier for people killing to run up massive body counts in rapid time. Guns make mass killings possible.
How many people would be dead in Arora Colorodo if the crazy just had a knife? How many kids in CT would still have their lives ahead of them if the wacko had to reload every six shots? People kill, not guns, but guns make it easier for them to get the job done like they do.
michael mirra December 26, 2012 at 12:49 am
I didn't hear about the kids cut up in Japan, or China. I bet the killers didn;'t run up the body counts that the All American Gunmen did though. America the beautiful. It makes a body proud.
Janis Graskewicz December 26, 2012 at 02:16 am
I can't speak for Dick's or any other sporting goods stores, but when Walmart pulls something off the shelves there are none in the back room. All recalls are sent back to the manufacturers and all UPC will not work. Big label on Cash registers state RECALL and will not ring up the item. This I know as a Walmart department manager.
If one of the principals or teachers had carried, the man could have been killed himself instead of those brave people who threw themselves unarmed in front of an assault rifle. The problem is not the type of gun. The problem is the fore thought to deter the problem happening before it happened. Isn't interesting that 11 armed guards protect our presidents child and our own children are left unprotected because of a few people that are afraid of guns? I grew up in an age when students brought guns to school in pickup trucks in a thing called a gun rack. Never had a problem back then. People need to think and protect their own. I would rather shoot that wait on a cop if my children or I were threatened. You think the gunman will wait for the cops to arrive?
michael mirra December 26, 2012 at 03:38 am
The ideas on this page prove beyond any doubt that there is too much of a gun culture in America. No wonder the rest of the world thinks we are a bunch of crazys.
Lets permit hand granades too, I mean why not really kick ass & take names? We can just forget the semi-automatic crap. Lets just sell machine guns to anyone that has the money. What the hell if crazys can kill any of us with ease? We'll just shoot back & turn the streets into the killing zones we want. If they don't like guns, we can cut their bellys open with bayonets. We're Americans so we can arm ourselves to the teeth. It's our right bestowed by the founding Fathers. You know who they were, they were inspired by God to give us devine guidance that has no no need to change with the changing times. Some crazys want to use sense & change with the times. That's for Obama lovers. We're true Americans. we're the master race & we're armed & in kill mode.

Just so our liberal readers have some comparisons. The China massacre was 30 people injured by the meat cleaver wheeling psycho, 7 children killed and 2 adults. I’m sure Amazon or Bed, Bath and Beyond will be announcing their band on meat cleavers any day now.
Banning assault rifles because a lunatic goes out and kills a bunch of poor kids is a crazy as banning gasoline because someone has been drinking and driving and runs a school bus off the road and kills everyone on board. Life sucks but there is no easy fix people. Talk of banning guns is a knee jerk reaction and is like putting a band-aid on a decapitation! Did you know? 32,367 people died in car crashes in 2011 9,878 due to DUI 8,583 shooting deaths 257 from assault rifles 2,064 from bladed type weapons 440,000 deaths due to tobacco use So according to the above statistics it would appear we are going after the wrong ban. Maybe we need to start with tobacco, and then we can move on to maybe alcohol and then finally cars.

Just remember this people...our enemies will always have access to the weapons you mention. Bad people DON'T FOLLOW THE LAW!!
Capy January 4, 2013 at 01:51 am
You are right on the money Rowan! This generation wants everything NOW. We did not get to this point over night and we are not going to fix it with a simple ban on assault rifles or a ban on anything. We will always have bad people doing bad things and they will come up with better ways of doing it as time goes on. We must be able to protect ourselves and we can only do that if we protect our rights.

We can make a statement by not buying things from Walmart and Dicks Support our Constitution Stand up for our rights I know I will
Deborah Weatherby January 22, 2013 at 12:15 am
sooo, do you really think that having an assault rifle with a mega clip is going to scare a tyrannical government from totally destroying you with a drone, or even the national guard pulling up to your door with a tank or my all time favorite, the Manville 25mm Projectile Launcher, now theres a weapon that will wipe out your house, your car, your whole family. No I think thats called suicide by cop.
Robertfloman January 30, 2013 at 10:41 pm
You can argue gun control all you want to but it doesn’t solve the problem that caused the shooting in the first place. Society, schools and our sense of community has broken down. The people that wend off the deep end and committed these terrible atrocities where all mental ill and felt lost or shunned from their communities. You’re not going to end mental illness and you’re not going to stop killings with more gun control. We as Americans need to refocus on our communities and our relationships with nor neighbors, friends and families.
