Want to Stop Unwanted Pet Euthanasia? You Can...

Ask your neighbor or friends if they have had their pet spayed or neutered and if they reply no, ask why.  You will have a litany of answers.  Some will tell you it’s because of cost.  Some will tell you it is not important and it does not have an effect on the pet overpopulation.

Cost should not be an issue.  Hillsborough County has a voucher program for vaccines, rabies tag and spay or neuter for $10 for low income families.  If they are not eligible for the voucher program both Humane Society of Tampa Bay and Animal Coalition of Tampa have very low cost programs for pets starting at $40 for cats and $75 for dogs.

It is important to spay or neuter your pet.  In Hillsborough County, we have a severe problem with cat overpopulation.  In the month of July, over 1200 cats were taken in by HCAS with only 302 felines being adopted or transferred to a rescue organization.

If you are not spaying or neutering your pets, you are contributing to pet overpopulation.  It takes a village to educate our community about our issues and these staggering figures should open a few of your friends or neighbors minds that we, the community, are contributing to the euthanasia rate in our county.
