USF to host Gelbart Lecture on divine law

The University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences and the Departments of Religious Studies and Philosophy will host the fifth June Baumgardner Gelbert Lecture in Jewish Studies. “Divine Law: A Tale of Two Concepts” will be presented by Dr. Christine Hayes, Weis Professor of Religious Studies at Yale University, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3 at C.W. Bill Young Hall, Room 206.

Hayes is a specialist in Talmudic-midrashic studies, which explores a compilation of sacred teachings in the Jewish religion. She will tackle two drastically different conceptions of divine law -- the Greek natural law built on reason and the biblical law built on revelation -- with three ancient Jewish responses that would shape western civilization in extraordinary ways.

Her other publications include introductory volumes such as “The Emergence of Judaism” and “Introduction to the Bible,” and several journal articles.
