Texting While Driving Could Become Illegal

The Florida Senate approved legislation to make it illegal to text and drive.

The state of Florida recently took a step closer to making texting while driving against the law.

On Tuesday, April 16 the Florida Senate passed Senate Bill 52 introduced by Sen. Nancy Detert, R-Venice, which makes texting, emailing or instant messaging while driving a traffic offense.

A first violation would result in a non-moving violation. After that, drivers caught texting and driving would be given a moving violation to include fines and points assessed to their licenses.

To become law, the measure must next pass the Florida House. If passed, Florida would become the 40th state to ban texting while driving.

Earlier this week, AAA The Auto Club Group, came out in support of the measure.

"By passing a law banning texting while driving, Florida continues the momentum in statehouses across the country to address this dangerous form of driver distraction," said Kevin Bakewell, AAA senior vice president, in a press release.
