The Jason Ackerman Foundation Helps Children Face Life After Tragedies

The nonprofit was named in honor of a Carrollwood resident.

This week's nonprofit spotlight is on The Jason Ackerman Foundation, which began five years ago after the accidental death of Carrollwood resident Jason Ackerman.

Patch talked to Shannon Hannon Oliviero, executive director of the organization, about how it began and how the community can get involved.

Hannon Oliviero: The Jason Ackerman Foundation focuses on improving the lives of children who have faced and survived tragic circumstances through educational support and entertaining experiences. We provide support through financial assistance, scholarship programs and interactive activities.

Patch: Who founded it, and when?

Hannon Oliviero: It was founded by the Ackerman family as a 501 © 3 in June of 2011, and supported by a board of directors that actually personally knew Jason. The foundation has been a funding source for scholarships for five years and has granted over $100,000 to over 50 pediatric cancer survivors to date.

Patch: What are some activities that the organization has been involved in in Tampa Bay?  Are those primary fundraisers for the nonprofit?

Hannon Oliviero: We truly have fundraising events for everyone, and priced for all as well. (That includes) 5K’s, golf, celebrity-supported events, parties, bowling, etc. All of our fundraisers directly support our mission and the youth that we serve.

Patch:  Why is the organization important for communities such as Carrollwood and Northdale?

Hannon Oliviero: We strive to fund and mentor youth that have survived and need further encouragement to be all they deserve and can be into adulthood. A very important element to us is how they intend to use their life experiences to positively impact out community and be an inspiration to others. Our kids are true heroes.

Patch: How can the community get involved if they want to donate or volunteer?

Hannon Oliviero: Visit us at www.facebook.com/JasonAckermanFoundation for daily updates, or our website at www.jasonackermanfoundation.org for secure donation opportunities.
