Nonprofit Spotlight: Positive Spin

Each week, we feature a different nonprofit

Positive Spin is a nonprofit organization that facilitates the prevention and awareness of issues such as child abuse in families through community service events.

For this week's nonprofit spotlight, Patch talked to Jada McMillon, the group's executive director, about how the group got started and how the community can get involved.

Patch: What is the purpose or mission of the organization?

McMillon: The mission of Positive Spin, Inc. is, “To stabilize families by providing support services to address stated needs while providing opportunities for growth and long-term self-sufficiency."

Patch: Who founded it and what year?

McMillon: Based on a model developed by the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, the Positive Support for Parents in Neighborhoods (Positive Spin) program was initiated in 2000 with the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and Ms. Harriet L. Scott. In June 2008, under the leadership of Scott, the agency became a 501C3. The agency continued under the leadership of Scott until her
retirement in 2010.

Patch: What are some activities that the organization has been involved in around Tampa Bay?

McMillon: Positive Spin hosts a variety of community events throughout the year. Our annual back to school event helps parents and students with school supplies and backpacks. By doing so, our youth are prepared and ready to learn on the first day of school. We also do awareness campaigns in the community. One in particular is our “Keeping Kids Safe” event held every year in the month of April. April is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month. The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to the community about child abuse.

Patch: Why is the organization important for communities such as Carrollwood and Northdale?

McMillon: Positive Spin is important to the community as it is positive support for parents and children. Connecting families to appropriate community resources, as well as providing support groups for families to participate in has proven to be effective in stabilizing families. The agency also provides assistance in the areas of housing, childcare, family counseling, school advocacy, tutoring and other supports. Our
goal is to stabilize and strengthen families while working towards long- term self sufficiency.
