Half A Ton Of Drugs Collected

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office collected more than 1,000 pounds of drugs during the Drug Take Back initiative.

A special operation to get unused prescription drugs off the street resulted in more than 1,000 pounds of collected drugs, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

That's double the amount of drugs collected at last year's Drug Take Back event.

The national effort was conducted locally by Hillsborough Sheriff deputies and volunteers on April 27 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at two Sweetbay Supermarkets in Hillsborough County.

In Northdale, law enforcement along with volunteers collected drugs at Sweetbay Supermarket, 15692 N. Dale Mabry Highway.

The two locations collected 74 boxes of unwanted prescription drugs approximately 1,320 pounds, according to a sheriff's office media release.

The Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance supported this take back
initiative. The unused and expired prescription medications collected prevents
potentially dangerous drugs from getting into the wrong hands, the release states.
