GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview March 24-27

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the Carrollwood area.

It’s Thursday and the weekend’s just around the corner. If you’re still stumped on what to do, we’ve got some great ideas.

  • Where/When: Tampa Police Headquarters, 411 N Franklin St. Thursday at 7 p.m.
  • Why Go: Mayor Pam Iorio and Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor unveil the all new Police Memorial  honoring the departments fallen officers. The memorial will feature a blue LED laser beam that begins from the monument and shines to the top of the  BB&T Bank building. The event will begin with a reception in the police department lobby at 7 p.m. followed by the memorial lighting ceremony at 8 p.m.
  • Price: Free!

  • Where/When: Independent Day School-Corbett Campus, 12015 Orange Grove Dr. Thursday at 7 p.m.
  • Why Go: The Independent Day School Musical Theatre Elective reprises Rodger and Hammerstein's, "Oklahoma!" Show your support for these talented student performers as they give life to the classic musical on stage. Sing along to such songs as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "All Er Nothin'." If you love music, this is a fun show you will not want to miss.
  • Price: $5.00 per person.

  • Where/When: Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 11802 N Dale Mabry Hwy. Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m.
  • Why Go: Famed comedian and actor tuned best-selling author, Steve Harvey will make an appearance at the local Barnes and Noble on Friday to meet with fans and sign copies of his latest book, "Straight Talk, No Chaser: How to Find, Keep, and Understand a Man." Wristbands will be given out Thursday at 6 p.m. to ensure your place in the book signing line. The author will sign a maximum of five copies per person, and you must have at least one purchase receipt present.
  • Price: Books are $24.99

  • Where/When: Carrollwood Players, 4331 Gunn Hwy. Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday at 3 p.m.
  • Why Go: The Carrollwood Players present, Love, Sex, & the IRS, a full length play originally written by American writer and actor, Billy Van Zandt. The story follows two roommates, Jon Trachtman and Leslie Arthur as they illegally file their tax returns as a married couple, and trouble ensues.
  • Price: $16 Adults,$14 Seniors, Students, & Military. Call 813-265-4000 for reservations.

  • Where/When: Lykes Gaslight Square Park, 410 N Franklin St. Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
  • Why Go: Downtown Tampa will be transformed into a race track for the 2011 Tampa Twilight Criterium. The 0.8 mile course begins and ends at Lykes Gaslight Park . The event will feature live music, food and beer gardens, activities for children and much more.
  • Price: Spectators free. Riders $10-$43.


  •  Where/When: Carrollwood Cultural Center, 4537 Lowell Rd. Saturday at 10 a.m., Sunday at noon.
  • Why Go:  Celebrate the Carrollwood Cultural Center's third anniversary at the annual Arts in the Park festival. More than 100 emerging and established artists will display their work at the two-day event for the public to admire. There will be an array of activities for all guests including a few hands-on craft projects for kids. 
  • Price: Free!
