County To Host Skateboarding Celebrations

While the Carrollwood area waits for its skate park to open, two other parks in the county are celebrating their anniversaries.

International "Go Skateboarding Day" happens this year on June 21. Hillsborough County will celebrate by hosting special 1-year anniversary events at its Apollo Beach and Brandon skateparks.

On "Go Skateboarding Day" skateboarders around the globe celebrate the sport. It is estimated that more than 18 million people worldwide skateboard.

In Hillsborough County, both skate parks will host skateboarding competitions, serve up free food and host giveaways. Using the hashtag #GoSkateboardingDay tweeters are welcome to come and spread the word about the events.

Interested in taking a drive to Brandon or Apollo Beach, here's the schedule:

  • 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. – Celebrate at Brandon Skate Park, 5720 Providence Road
  • 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. – Celebrate at Apollo Beach Skate Park, 664 Gulf and Sea Blvd.
By the end of the summer, a skate park will open closer to Carrollwood. County officials estimate the skate park located at Jackson Springs Recreation Center should be open by the end of summer.

Once open at 8620 Jackson Springs Road, skaters will be required to wear  helmets. Skaters 12 and younger will also be required to wear knee and elbow pads. The county will not charge admission to the skate park.
