Mathes: I was a teen when I started art.  I took art in junior high school, senior high school and at USF.  I stopped art for a long time while in the U.S. Air Force and while in business.  I picked up art again when I retired.

Patch: Who or what influences you?

Mathes: My mother was the start of art (being an) interest for me. She painted murals on walls and cabinets in our home.

Patch: What are misconceptions that people have about artists?

Mathes: I think some people misconcieve artists as strickly bohemian and not industrious.  Good art takes educating your eyes and hands and usually long hours of work.

Patch: What do you think your art says about you?

Mathes: What my artwork says about me is that I have a varied subject matter.  I've done seascapes, landscapes, people, nightscenes and still life. I am open to new frontiers.

Patch:  Where can your art be seen?

Mathes: Some of my work can be viewed at the Life Enrichment Center at 9704 N. Boulevard.  Other artists can be viewed there also.  It is a great place to see and participate in art at any level.
