Help deter auto burglary—Lock your car doors!

Most vehicle burglaries occur to unlocked vehicles. You can help deter vehicle burglary by following these few simple steps.

Believe it or not, but most vehicle burglaries occur to vehicles that are left unlocked! An unsecured vehicle is an easy target for a criminal. You can help to deter vehicle burglary by following these few simple steps:

  • Always secure your vehicle when left unattended; roll up all the windows and lock all the doors! Never leave your vehicle unattended while the engine is running, even if only for a moment (it’s a violation of State law!)
  • Never leave any potential items of value inside your vehicle or out in plain view (i.e. laptop, GPS, cell phone, briefcase, tools, cash, jewelry, wallet, keys, purse, checkbook, garage door opener, mail with your home address, shopping bags, etc.). Remove these items from the vehicle or lock them in the trunk.
  • If your vehicle is equipped, utilize the audible alarm system. If your vehicle is not equipped, consider having one installed.
  • Whenever possible, try to park in a well lit, highly visible, heavily trafficked area or inside a secure garage.
