Help Close the (Garage) Door on Burglary and Theft

A number of garage burglaries and thefts occur due to victims' leaving their garage doors open and left unattended. Don't give criminals a chance! Follow these tips for keeping you garage secure!

A number of garage burglaries and thefts can be attributed, in part, to victims leaving their garage doors open and left unattended.

Remember, if you give a criminal the opportunity to take advantage of you, they will! Always try to excercise good crime preventative security strategies, such as:

  • Keeping your garage door closed when the garage is not in use. If it is in use, never leave your garage unattended.

  • Try to keep any doors leading from your garage to the inside of your home locked. If equipped, set your audible house alarm to "chime" to alert you if the entry door is opened.

  • Even if you park you car in the garage, lock your doors. If you park your car in the driveway, always be sure to secure your vehicle! Be sure to remove or hide your garage door opener in the glove box, and lock it!

  • Secure any valuables kept in your garage (bicycles, yard tools, golf clubs, etc.) Try to keep them out of site whenever the garage door is open by keeping them covered up or otherwise concealed.

  • Spread the word! If you see that someone next door or on your street has left their garage door open, do the neighborly thing and let them know. Nine times out of 10, they just forgot to close the door.

  • Be aware of any suspicious persons, vehicles, or activity in the neighborhood and immediately report it to your local law enforcement. In the event of an emergency or a crime-in-progress, please dial 911!
